Liberal Studies at New York University is seeking Writing instructors to join our adjunct faculty pool. Successful candidates will be contacted on an as-needed basis to fill section openings in the Liberal Studies Core, if and when such openings arise. Candidates must be prepared to deliver course content remotely if conditions do not allow in-person instruction.

 Liberal Studies provides a unique interdisciplinary educational experience to undergraduate students. The Liberal Studies Core consists of a two-year interdisciplinary global curriculum drawing on great works across civilizations. The Global Liberal Studies Bachelor of Arts, one of NYU’s premier liberal arts degrees, builds on the global core with an upper division interdisciplinary set of concentrations that direct students toward different areas of global study.

Course Descriptions

Liberal Studies offers two classes in our Writing sequence, both of which are required for LS Core students; candidates should be prepared to teach either course as needed. Classes meet twice weekly, for 75 minutes per class session.

Writing as Exploration

The first in the two-course series, Writing as Exploration (re)introduces first year students to the essay genre and complicates their understanding of its varied forms and functions. The course has two main objectives. The first is to develop self-confidence and fluency through the use of writing to express, explore, and develop ideas through a variety of modes, including informal writing (free writing, journal writing, etc.). The second objective is to practice the critical and analytical skills students will use throughout their undergraduate career. All papers go through multiple drafts, often with input from peers in addition to the instructor.

Throughout the course, students write 4,000-5,000 words of polished, graded writing. Three major essay assignments (assignments of more than 1,200 words and requiring the submission of at least one draft) is typical for the course.

Writing as Critical Inquiry

The second in the two-course series, Writing as Critical Inquiry introduces students to research and documentation techniques necessary for undergraduate work as well as writing beyond academic contexts. Instructors are free to choose a theme for the course if they so desire, whether that theme is artistic, historic, philosophic, or otherwise in nature. Global issues and perspectives are engaged through reading and writing assignments, as well as through experiential learning. Through a process of drafting, seeking feedback, incorporating feedback, and revising essay drafts, students practice a variety of prose genres utilizing forms of research. These genres may include but are not limited to ethnographic studies, arts criticism, literary journalism, and argumentative essays.

Students will be required to produce 5,000 to 6,250 words of polished, graded prose. One or more of the written assignments must grapple with the questions of place and the tensions and meanings of local and global experience.


Minimum qualifications: an MFA in Creative Writing or a PhD in English, Communication Studies, Comparative Literature, or a related Humanities discipline is strongly preferred, though senior doctoral students (ABD) with teaching experience will be considered; a minimum of one year of college-level teaching experience; and demonstrated excellence in teaching. Candidates must embrace interdisciplinary, intersectional, and global perspectives.
