Adjunct Professor of Finance

University of Southern California

United States

Position Overview

The Finance and Business Economics (FBE) Department in the Marshall School of Business invites applications for a part-time faculty (non-tenure-track) position for AY 2025-2026.

USC defines two categories of appointment for faculty working less than full time: Adjunct and Part-time. The difference is primarily based on the nature of a faculty member’s professional work outside of teaching at USC.

Definition of Adjunct Faculty

USC reserves the “Adjunct Faculty” appointment for faculty teaching less than full time at USC, who are employed full time in a primary profession or career elsewhere. Adjunct faculty typically teach only one course per year but, in exceptional cases, may teach one course per semester, if approved by the dean.

Examples:

  • A full-time freelance artist

  • A lawyer employed full-time at a firm

  • A pharmacist employed full-time by a pharmacy

  • A consultant/entrepreneur/CFO teaching 1-2 classes per year

  • A retired person who considers themselves fully retired but teaches 1-2 classes per year

Definition of Part-time Faculty

USC reserves the “Part-time Faculty” appointment for faculty teaching less than full time who are not employed full time in a primary position or career elsewhere.

Examples:

  • A therapist with a part-time private practice

  • A musician with part-time performance bookings

  • A biologist with a part-time lab job

  • Someone retired from a career who teaches less than full time

Part-time Faculty may teach a maximum of 3 courses per semester, with a goal to limit that to 2 as full-time faculty numbers increase.
