The Science, Engineering & Technology Group of KU Leuven Campus Kulak at Kortrijk has a vacancy for a full-time academic position in Applied Mathematics (under the auspices of KU Leuven Faculty of Science, Department of Mathematics). All tasks related to this position are primarily localized and carried out at KU Leuven Campus Kulak at Kortrijk, and require an active presence at this campus. We are looking for internationally oriented candidates with an excellent research record and with teaching competence in Mathematics.Science, Engineering & Technology Group at KulakThe Science, Engineering & Technology Group of Campus Kulak at Kortrijk organises the Bachelor programmes in Sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Informatics, Biology and Chemistry), including options towards farmaceutical, engineering and bio-engineering study programmes. Hence, it is a very multidisciplinary environment, both in terms of education and research. At present, the mathematics research of the group is performed in two research groups: Algebraic Topology and Group Theory (Pure Mathematics) and Mathematical Physics (modelling and simulation of physical phenomena & signal processing). As a member of the senior academic staff of the Science, Engineering & Technology Group of Campus Kulak at Kortrijk, you will also belong to the Department of Mathematics and the Faculty of Science in the Science, Engineering & Technology Group of KU Leuven.



We expect that you will develop research activities in the field of applied mathematics and/or mathematics with physical background that complement and strengthen the existing research initiatives at Campus Kulak, and fits within the Department of Mathematics. Complementarity in the theme of Mathematical Physics (modelling and simulation of physical phenomena & signal processing) is an asset. You are encouraged to set up collaborations with other researchers at Campus Kortrijk as well as at other campuses of KU Leuven. In view of developing your own research programme, you are capable of acquiring research funding in a competitive setting, and you are proficient in setting up national as well as international research collaborations. Furthermore, you are supposed to serve as an advisor to PhD-candidates and to publish in international leading journals within your field of research.



Your teaching tasks will consist of several mathematics courses at Campus Kulak Kortrijk, in the study programmes within the Science, Engineering & Technology Group or in service education provided by this group. This includes basic courses in Mathematics and Mathematical Physics (for a diversity of academic programmes) as well as more advanced courses in the Bachelor of Mathematics itself. Your teaching duties can change depending on the evolution of the study programmes at Kortrijk. Teaching can take up to 50% of your tasks. As it is an element of the educational and pedagogical profile of KU Leuven Kulak, an active interest and professionalisation in educational quality and training is expected. The teaching duties linked to this position require an immediate and profound active knowledge of the Dutch language (C1-language level for Dutch is required for teaching).



You are keen in finding regional, national or international opportunities for collaboration with companies and other partners outside the university. You represent the Science, Engineering & Technology Group of Campus Kulak at Kortrijk, your department, your faculty and your group in external activities and you operate as the primary contact between the university and its regional partners. You actively participate in one or several outreach activities such as science communication, lifelong learning or societal debates.



  • You have a PhD in Sciences: Mathematics,a doctorate in Engineering: Mathematical Engineering Technology, or another equivalent degree with research experience in (applied) Mathematical Physics.Your research expertise should be visible through numerous publications in international leading research journals.
  • You are able to present a research plan that exhibits the added value for the regional, national and international recognition of Kulak, and specifying relevant collaborations with other partners inside and outside the university.
  • You have demonstrable qualities in providing academic education in Dutch and you must hold a language certificate Dutch CEFR level C1 at the start of your appointment. Teaching experience is an advantage. Before teaching courses in English,you will be given the opportunity to learn English, to the required standard.
  • You have a personal vision and a clear perspective on academic teaching and education organization.
  • You have organisational skills and a cooperative attitude. Leadership qualities in a university context are required. You will be involved in service tasks related to outreach of your own research and teaching, and the research and teaching by the Science, Engineering & Technology Group of Campus Kulak at Kortrijk.



We offer a full-time position in a multidisciplinary and intellectually challenging environment. KU Leuven Kulak is part of a research-intensive, internationally oriented university with fundamental as well as applied research interests, aiming at international excellence. As a junior researcher you will be appointed as tenure track assistant professor (“tenure track docent”) for a period of 5 years, starting October 1st 2019. After this period and a positive evaluation, you obtain a tenured position as associate professor (“hoofddocent” or associate professor).
