Innovative use of nationwide registers, large cohort studies and other sources  of ‘big data’ allows for complex analyses to better describe and understand human life histories, the maintenance of health and the occurrence and prognosis of disease. The Section of Epidemiology strongly invests into the development of theory and methodology in this field. To achieve this goal the University of Copenhagen seeks to appoint a tenure track Assistant Professor of Epidemiology to the Section of Epidemiology, Department of Public Health to commence on 1 December 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job description  

The Assistant Professor will participate in the young, interdisciplinary and dynamic research environment at the Section of Epidemiology. The responsibilities will primarily consist of: 

• Contributing to research centred around causal inference, complexity and/or life course trajectories; 

• Adding to the academic and public dissemination of the results; 

• Acquisition of funding; 

• Guidance and supervision of pre- and post-doctoral students; 

• Providing teaching in Epidemiology at a pre-doctorate level; 

• Engaging in the university’s internal and external academic activities. 


The Assistant Professor will be expected to participate in a formal pedagogical training program. The Assistant Professor’s performance will be evaluated annually. After no more than six years of employment and on condition of a positive final appraisal, the tenure track Assistant Professor will be employed as Associate Professor. Required qualifications  

• A PhD degree or similar qualifications in the field of epidemiology or related areas; 

• Communicative skills in writing and speaking; 

• Research experience within epidemiology with a specific focus on causal inference, complexity and/or life course epidemiology; 

• Proven ability to attract funding is a plus; 

• Teaching experience in in the field of epidemiological or related areas; 

• Collaborative skills. 


The tenure track Assistant Professor must have an academic standing showing in, and or the ambition and willingness to compete at an internationally level to make impact. The Assistant Professor is required to be entrepreneurial and to possess the necessary personal skills.  


Terms of employment  

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations. The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (2013).

Application procedure 

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee.  All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment. The Dean then appoints an expert assessment committee in order to make an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific post. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself.
