Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated full‐time PhD student on the topic of “macroeconomic conditions, distribution of wealth and adolescent health”. We offer you a two-year appointment, which may renewed, depending on future research grants (with a maximum term of four years). The project will be performed within the context of the international Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey (http://www.hbsc.org/). The PhD will be based at the Department of Public Health and Primary Care at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Supervisors of the PhD are dr. Bart De Clercq and prof. dr. Benedicte Deforche.

The aim of this research project is to examine the link between macroeconomic conditions, wealth inequality and adolescent health in Europe. This involves the following main tasks:

• Refining the existing theoretical framework (i.e. identifying the transmission channels between macroeconomic conditions, wealth inequality and adolescent health).

• Performing statistical analysis using several existing databases (i.e. ECB HFCS, OECD, Eurostat & WHO HBSC).

• Presenting the results on international conferences and within the international HBSC network.

• Writing scientific papers.

Profile of the candidate

• A strong motivation to perform scientific research and to obtain a PhD based on scientific papers as result of the research project.

• Excellent analytical skills. This entails a strong theoretical background in general statistics (OLS regression) and econometrics (time series analysis and panel models), and practical experience with statistical software (e.g. STATA, R or Eviews).

• A broad interest in applied macroeconomics, social policy and health.

• Well-developed social skills towards working in an interdisciplinary team and towards collaboration with various colleagues.

• Good project planning skills and the ability to work independently.

• Very good to excellent English language skills (verbally and written).

How to apply

Applications must contain the following documents in English:

(1) a personal motivation letter;

(2) an extensive CV (incl. bachelor and master examination results);

(3) contact details of at least one referent (e.g. the supervisor of your master thesis).

Informal enquiries and applications must be addressed to b.declercq@ugent.be.
