A postdoctoral position is available in the Choudhary Group at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research (CPR –, University of Copenhagen, and we are now looking for a highly motivated and qualified postdoc candidate to join our research group. 


Tentative start date: Late 2018/early 2019. 


About the Choudhary group and CPR 

The ‘Proteomics and Cell Signaling’ group at CPR is led by Group Leader/Professor Chunaram Choudhary. The Choudhary group works closely with other groups at CPR, especially with the ‘Clinical Proteomics’ group led by Professor. Matthias Mann. In a broad sense, the Choudhary group combines quantitative proteomics, cell biology and biochemistry to investigate cell signaling at a ‘systems-level’ and to identify novel regulatory mechanisms in cell signaling.  


The group applies cutting-edge mass spectrometry (MS)-based technologies for unbiased identification and quantification of posttranslational modifications, such as ubiquitylation, phosphorylation and acetylation (Weinert and Narita et al., Cell 2018; Scholz et al., Nat Biotech 2015; Choudhary et al., Nat Rev Mol cell Biol 2014 and 2010; Weinert et al., Mol Cell 2013; Povlsen and Beli et al., Nat Cell Biol 2012; Beli et al. Mol Cell 2012; Choudhary et al. Science 2009). 
The group uses CRISPR-based genome editing for functional investigations and for mapping protein-protein interactions in the context of chromatin-associated processes, such as DNA damage repair (Gupta et al., Cell 2018; Thorslund et al., Nature 2015; Wild et al., Cell Rep 2016). In addition to the state-of-the-art mass spectrometry, the laboratory is equipped with the cutting-edge infrastructure for molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry work.  


Furthermore, CPR offers the latest technologies and expertise for quantitative proteomics, the next-generation nucleic acid sequencing, high-resolution microscopy, live cell imaging, as well as biophysical and structural characterization of proteins. Our group is technically and internationally diverse and embedded in excellent environment for high-quality research and collaboration. The group consistently publishes in top-ranked journals and has an outstanding track-record in training the next generation of researchers (more than 50% of former postdocs from the group were recruited as independent investigators at top-ranked institutes).  


Project Description 

The candidate will use a combination of the cutting-edge proteomics and CRSPR-based genome editing methods to investigate ubiquitylation (or acetylation) signaling networks in genetically defined cell models. Among other tasks, this will include CRISPR-based generation of genetically modified human cell lines, affinity-tagging of endogenous proteins, mass spectrometry-based analysis of protein-protein interactions and proteome-wide quantification of posttranslational modifications. The candidate is expected to apply various biochemical and molecular biology approaches for biological follow-up experiments on novel and interesting findings derived from large-scale proteomic screens.  



The candidate should have demonstrated excellent scientific productivity, evidenced by high-quality research publications, be able to conduct independent and creative research, and show good inter-personal and communication skills.  

  • The candidate is required to have a PhD degree or equivalent in natural or medical science. 

  • Excellent scientific track-record, including at least one publication as first author in a high-quality, peer reviewed international journal. 

  • Expert knowledge in one or more of the following areas would be considered an advantage: 

    - Analysis of cell signaling with biochemistry and molecular biology approaches
    - Genetics and cell biology
    - Ubiquitin signaling
    - CRISPR-based genome editing
    - Analysis of large-scale proteomic and/or genomic dataset
    - Genome integrity, DNA damage repair, chromatin biology, gene transcription.  

  • Prior experience in high resolution mass spectrometry is not essential. 

  • Good communication skills, both oral and written. 

  • An analytical aptitude for devising innovative scientific or technical solutions. 

  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, motivation, flexibility and confidence.

Place of employment and work 

The employment is at CPR (, University of Copenhagen, located in central Copenhagen. CPR started its first operation in 2009 and within a short span of time CPR has established itself as a top-level research institute in protein signaling and network biology research. The research environment at CPR is ambitious and international, with approx. 30 different nationalities currently represented. The Center comprises modern laboratories, supercomputer resources and state-of-the-art facilities within protein science, including microscopy, cryo-EM, and the next generation sequencing.

Terms of salary and employment 

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.The position is covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” of June 28, 2013. 


The gross basic salary range for Postdoctoral Fellows is DKK 33,600 (approx. EUR 4,500) to DKK 35,377 (approx. 4,741) per month (level 6 to 8). To the basic salary a supplement could be negotiated, dependent on the candidate’s experience and qualifications. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % monthly contribution to pension. 


The Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) have agreed on a protocol that makes it possible for all international researchers employed by the University to achieve a pension exemption, where the pension will be paid out as salary. Duration: The duration of the positions is 2 years with a possible extension for up-to two years (depending on the performance, and previous employment at the University of Copenhagen).
