The Department of Biology at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for an associate professorship in Bioinformatics. The position is to be filled by 1 March 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter, subject to negotiation. 

 

The Department of Biology is among the largest Departments of the University of Copenhagen. It employs about 475 academic and technical staff and hosts research programmes and teaching curricula that cover all major biological sub-disciplines. University rankings typically place the field of Biology at the University of Copenhagen first in Denmark and among the top 30 universities internationally. In addition to a PhD-programme, three BSc study programmes (biology, biochemistry, molecular biomedicine) and four MSc study programmes (biology, biochemistry, molecular biomedicine, bioinformatics) engage close to 2000 students. 

 

The new associated professorship will be embedded in the Section for Computational and RNA Biology. The Section's research spans the DNA, RNA and protein worlds and covers the methodological spectrum from wet-lab molecular biology to advanced computational model building and statistical inference. 

 

The Section has state-of-the-art wet-lab and computational facilities embedded in a cross-disciplinary research environment. Section staff currently includes three professors, five associate professors, three laboratory technicians, and more than 40 post docs and PhD students that enjoy an informal, trusting and collaborative working atmosphere. The Section is supported by substantial external funding. 

 

Description of the position 

The appointee is expected to take a leading role in the establishment of an externally funded research programme in biological data sciences to strengthen analysis and machine learning of biological and life science big data, and to develop a network of national and international collaborations. She/he is expected to integrate with and strengthen our research environment of high-quality bioinformatics research. Complementarity with regard to the current research focus of the section is essential as is an interest in establishing interdisciplinary collaboration with the other sections at the department. In addition to research, duties also include teaching and supervision of students at the undergraduate, graduate and PhD-levels, with prime course assignments within the Bioinformatics Master's degree programme, as well as some management tasks requested by the Department. 

 

Qualifications/profile 

Applicants should have a scientific background within computational biology/bioinformatics. A significant track-record of attracting external research funding as well as a significant publication record in high-level, international, peer-reviewed ISI journals is required. Candidates are also required to have documented university level competencies in delivering high-quality undergraduate/graduate teaching and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen Teaching and Learning in Higher Education programme is necessary. Finally, candidates are expected to have managerial qualifications and experience in leading a competitive research group, as well as out-reach qualifications.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, scientific profile in relation to ongoing research at the section, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered. 

 

Terms of employment 

The position is open from 1 March 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.  

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff. Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.  

For Assoc. Professor – up to DKK 461.868 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 78.979) 

 

Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
