To expand the research expertise within the research team Muscles and Movement and the teaching activities in the bachelor programs of the Faculty of Medicine, the Group Biomedical Sciences has the following full-time vacancy at KU Leuven Campus Kulak Kortrijk. The Group Biomedical Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine at KU Leuven Campus Kulak Kortrijk organizes the bachelor programs in Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The Kulak campus in Kortrijk offers an interdisciplinary academic environment with a specific and dynamic campus concept. Interesting research opportunities are offered, for example in the Interdisciplinary Research Facility Life Sciences.




You are expected to develop your own research program based on experimental laboratory research that is complementary to the existing research initiatives of the research group Muscles and Movement and to  the research groups in Leuven, for example using cell biological or cell physiological aspects of muscle. You strive for excellence in your research and in this manner provide a contribution to the continued development of the department. You set up collaborations with researchers in KU Leuven Campus Kulak Kortrijk and with researchers from other campuses of KU Leuven. The development of a research program includes acquiring competitive funding, establishing national and international collaborations, supervision of PhD programs and publishing in international leading journals in the field.


Your teaching assignment will include several basic courses in the domain of  cell biology and  cell physiology in the bachelor programs of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Campus Kulak Kortrijk. Your teaching duties can change depending on the evolution of the study programmes at Kortrijk Teaching assignments can take up to 50% of your tasks. As a specific element of the educational and pedagogical profile of KU Leuven Campus Kulak Kortrijk, an active interest and professionalization in educational quality, innovation and training is expected. You ensure high-quality education, with a clear commitment for the quality of the program as a whole. A a residing faculty member, you maintain a close contact with the students. 


Given that teaching activities will performed in Dutch and that a quick implementation of your teaching activities will be expected, a CEFR degree level C1 for Dutch will be required at the end of the tenure-track period.



You are keen in finding regional, national or international opportunities for collaboration with companies and other partners outside the university. You represent the Biomedical Sciences Group and the Faculty of Medicine in the region and you  you operate as the primary contact between the university and its regional partners. You actively participate in several outreach activities such as science communication, consultation meetings, contact with prospective students for example at information days and events.


You have a PhD in Sciences or Biomedical Sciences or similarly related degree in Life Sciences of equal quality. You have a strong research profile through experience in the domain of the group Muscles and Movement. The quality of your research is proven by publications in prominent leading journals in the field. You have demonstrable qualities related to academic education. Academic teaching experience, with proven didactic qualities,  is an advantage.You possess organizational skills and have a cooperative attitude. You also possess leadership capacities within a university context. You take initiative to participate in service duties that contribute to the outreach of your own research and teaching and that of the Group Biomedical Sciences at Campus Kulak Kortrijk towards prospective students and the region. Proficiency in English is required. The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in administrative meetings. Before you start you teaching assignment in Dutch or English, you are offered the opportunity to acquire the necessary knowledge of Dutch or English. International experience is an important advantage.



We are offering a full-time employment in an interdisciplinary,  intellectually challenging  environment. In your future activities, you are asked to include a specific description of the complementarity and added value of your research within the existing research context of KU Leuven Campus Kulak Kortrijks as well as a description of your motivation for and vision on academic teaching. Depending on your record and qualifications, you will be appointed to or tenured in one of the grades of the senior academic staff: assistant professor, associate professor, professor or full professor. In principle, junior researchers are appointed as assistant professor on the tenure track for a period of 5 years; after this period and a positive evaluation, they are permanently appointed (or tenured) as an associate professor.
