The Norwegian Centre for Learning Environment and Behavioral Research in Education, which is part of the Faculty of Arts and Education, is one out of eleven national Centres in education. The Centre assists education authorities in the process of implementing the national education policy. It additonally works with self-initiated research and development projects, competence development for kindergartens and schools, as well as teaching and supervision within the university. The Centre's vision is to be a national driving force in the promotion of safe and good learning environments in kindergartens and schools. 


Research fellow in Educational Science - Quality in kindergarten

This is a trainee position that will give promising candidates an opportunity for academic development leading to a doctoral degree.


The fellow is employed for a period of three years. The position is vacant from 01.08.2019.


The theme for the position is Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) Quality.


In a center called FILIORUM, new toolboxes will be developed in close collaboration with the field of practice to contribute to good quality in the ECEC sector. Furthermore, both major RCT studies (randomized controlled trials) and qualitative studies will be conducted to study whether the new tools that are developed actually contribute to increased quality in ECEC centers. Before RCT studies can be carried out, it is necessary for researchers in FILIORUM to initiate a broad exploration of existing tools to promote ECEC quality, and of ECEC quality assessments. This exploration will involve many researchers in FILIORUM, and the search for tools and assessments will take place both within national and international research literature. This PhD will aim at exploring new tools and assessment for ECEC quality, for example "Assessing Quality in Early Childhood Education and Care: Sustained Shared Thinking and Emotional Well-Being (SSTEW) Scale for 2–5-year-old commissions » (Siraj, 2015).


Topics for the PhD project may include:

  • Evaluation of current toolboxes for ECEC quality based on new theories for quality, such as Sustained Shared Thinking
  • Exploration of the relevant assessments, for example SSTEW, in a Norwegian context
  • Comparison of guidelines in the Framework Plan and other policy documents for the Norwegian kindergarten with theories and findings related to new tools and assessments for ECEC quality

The dissertation will be article-based, with articles published in international scientific journals, and the person who is appointed must master English at a level that makes this possible.


Applicants are expected to hand in a five-page project description within the relevant topic together with the application. For the candidate that is employed, the project description will be the starting point for further processing in consultation with the supervisors towards the final project description to be approved by the doctoral committee at the faculty.


The PhD research fellowship will be included as part of the work in the FILIORUM, Centre for Research in Early Childhood Education and Care, funded by the Norwegian Research Council (NFR). The centre started up August 2018 and will focus on research related to quality in the diverse kindergarten. FILIORUMs's overall aim is to promote belonging, communication and play for all children. Applicants must have a strong academic background with a five-year master's degree in pedagogy, special education, psychology or other equivalent education, preferably of a recent date, which qualitfies for a Doctoral Education. The grade from the Master's thesis and the weighted average grade from the Master's program must both correspond to B or better to be considered.


When assessing candidates for this position, academic level, the quality of the project description, the applicant's potential for research within the field, and his or her personal prerequisites for conducting the research education will al be considered.


The appointee must be able to work independently and as a member of a team, be creative and innovative.


The research fellow must have a good command of both oral and written English.


The resulting PhD degree will qualify for research and teaching positions at University level.


The appointee will be based at the University of Stavanger, with the exception of a stay abroad at a relevant centre of research. 


The salary for this position is set according to the State Salary Code, 17.515, code 1017, NOK 449.400 per annum. The position provides an automatic membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which guarantees favourable retirement benefits.
