Research Assistant II (holding the functional title of Graphic Artist/Cartographer) in the Department of Earth Sciences (Ref.: 494067) (to commence on April 1, 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter for one year, with the possibility of renewal)


Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree or above in natural or social sciences, humanities, or a related discipline; and an interest in working with natural scientists to help communicate science to peers and society at large. They should have educational exposure to visualization of scientific data, cartography, and/or geo-visualization; experience in Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, and other graphical design software; and excellent communication skills in spoken and written English. Fluency in Cantonese would be an advantage. Those with experience in GIS and GIS scripting/programming, computer programming in modern Fortran and/or shell scripting, and PostgreSQL database programming would have an advantage. The appointee will be responsible for preparing maps and animations based on complex multi-dimensional geospatial data; post-processing and distribution of datasets to collaborators worldwide; conducting online and library research, data collection and organization; assisting members of a scientific team in the preparation of compelling scientific posters, presentations, and other visualizations.
