Position description

The Department of Scandinavian at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for an assistant adjunct faculty position in the area of Swedish Literature and Culture. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate strong teaching and research interests in interdisciplinary and/or comparative approaches to Swedish Literature and Culture.

The department is dedicated to the advancement of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. We seek candidates for this position who demonstrate a commitment to advancing these central values of our department and campus. Candidates should show strong potential for mentorship and course design that are attuned to the interests and needs of our first-generation students and/or students of color.

The successful appointee will teach in English at the undergraduate and graduate levels, will mentor and supervise our graduate and undergraduate students, and will be a conscientious community member of the department, participating in program development, departmental meetings and events. The appointee will also be expected to maintain an active program of research and publication, and to show promise of superior intellectual achievement in both teaching and research. New PhDs are encouraged to apply.

The Department is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

PhD (or equivalent international degree), or enrolled in a PhD or equivalent international degree-granting program.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Completion of the Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree).

Preferred qualifications

Native or near-native competence in English and in Swedish languages.

Expertise in Swedish Literature and Culture.

Strong ability for successful teaching and student advising.

Research and administrative service commensurable with years of experience.

Potential for successful attraction of and mentoring of new students.

Potential for program development and designing new courses.
