The position is in the field of logopedics.

Logopedics is a discipline that studies the various manifestations, underlying factors and rehabilitation of disorders of speech, voice, language and communication as well as swallowing disorders. The development and assessment of communicative functions are also at the core of education and research in the discipline. A special focus of logopedic research at the University of Helsinki is the study of the impact of logopedic interventions and the characteristics of speech therapy interaction. Moreover, research in logopedics at the University focuses on a wide range of manifestations of communication disorders, their assessment and rehabilitation interventions, as well as augmentative and alternative communication methods. There are active research groups studying aphasia, autism, hearing disorders, multilingualism, multimodal communication, dementia, early language development and conversational interactions involving participants with communication disorders. Interaction research has been carried out for a long time in multidisciplinary research groups and is internationally renowned and of high quality.

The position may be filled as assistant professor and associate professor depending on the candidates’ merits and career stage.

Qualification Requirements for the Position of Assistant/Associate Professor
An appointee to the position of assistant/associate professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means.When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience.

The Duties of the Position
The duties of an assistant professor/associate professor of logopedics include the provision of instruction based on logopedic research in the Degree Programme in Logopedics. Together with the board of the programme, the appointee will also plan and develop BA and MA Degree studies in Logopedics, and supervise a wide variety of theses and dissertations.

The appointee’s duties also include carrying out and supervising scientific research in the field, obtaining external research funding, following developments in research in the relevant fields and participating in community relations and Finnish and international research cooperation. In addition, the duties include other tasks assigned to the department.

As the administrative and teaching language of logopedics at the University of Helsinki is primarily Finnish, the appointee is expected to acquire knowledge of Finnish required for administrative tasks, within 3 to 5 years.

The practical competence required for the position can be demonstrated with the qualification of a certified speech-language therapist. Supplementary clinical and theoretical studies related to communication disorders and their research will also be considered an asset.

The salary will be based on level 7 (assistant professor) of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities.
