Two Assistant and/or Associate Professors (tenure track) in physics

The Faculty of Mathematics and Science is currently seeking candidates for two Assistant and/or Associate Professor tenure track positions, one in Physics and one in Theoretical Physics, starting on 1.9.2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. Assistant Professor positions are for a fixed term of 3 to 5 years and Associate Professor for a fixed term of five years. 

The main areas of research at the Department of Physics are subatomic physics and materials physics. The core research fields in subatomic physics are nuclear structure, especially the physics of exotic nuclei, nuclear models, double beta decay, ion source physics, applied accelerator-based research, physics of the strong interaction and ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, particle cosmology and neutrino physics. In materials physics the research fields are nanophysics and quantum technologies, non-equilibrium physics, superconductivity, low temperature physics, computational materials physics and physics of complex materials. Experimental research at the Department is conducted in the Accelerator Laboratory, the multidisciplinary Nanoscience Center (NSC), Tomography Laboratory, and in foreign research centers such as CERN and GSI.

The responsibilities of the Assistant Professor / Associate Professor in Physics include research and teaching related to her/his own research area. The selected candidate is expected to conduct internationally recognized high-level research in nuclear structure and astrophysics at JYFL-ACCLAB and FAIR. The candidate is also expected to coordinate and strengthen Finnish research and development activities in the FAIR project. 

The responsibilities of the Assistant Professor / Associate Professor in Theoretical Physics include research and teaching related to her/his own research area. The selected candidate is expected to conduct internationally recognized high-level research in theoretical nuclear physics including development of new theoretical approaches. The candidate is also expected to build a team to strengthen the research in this field and to improve links with the other research areas of the Department.

In addition to regular teaching responsibilities, the selected candidates are expected to supervise students at the Bachelor, Master and Post-Graduate level. Continual development of the Department’s teaching activities, administrative tasks related to teaching, and other academic obligations are also part of the everyday duties of these positions. The selected candidates are expected to seek external funding to finance research, PhD students, and post-doctoral researchers.

Candidates should have an excellent record of conducting and publishing scientific research, establishing international networks, obtaining funding, and teaching. A position of Assistant Professor is for a fixed term of 3 to 5 years and  a position of Associate Professor is for a fixed term of 5 years (according to the Tenure track at the University of Jyväskylä). At the conclusion of each fixed-term assignment, there will be an evaluation procedure to assess the employee's qualifications for the next step.

Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A holiday bonus is paid to all employees.
