The Department of Plant and Microbial Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant to Associate Project Scientist in the Melis Lab, in the areas of Metabolic Engineering and Synthetic Biology, at 100% time with an expected start of Summer 2020.

The candidate will use high-throughput screening to conduct metabolic engineering and synthetic biology research for the generation of specialty and commodity products. Duties include the design and development of DNA constructs for high level expression of heterologous genes and biosynthetic pathways in photosynthetic tissues, and critical analysis of the results to inform the optimization required to improve the function of native and heterologous biosynthetic pathways for product generation. The work involves the transformation of photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic organisms with heterologous gene constructs designed to cause overexpression of the corresponding proteins, followed by the genetic, molecular, biochemical and physiological analysis of the transformants.

The position encompasses project development and management, implementation, and contributions to reporting of results by presentations or manuscript submissions. In addition, the candidate will be tasked to mentor and assist in training new incoming lab members. The candidate will have the opportunity to seek out their own collaborative research projects.

Basic Qualifications (At the time of application):

  • Ph.D. or equivalent international degree, or enrollment in Ph.D. program or equivalent international program

  • Ph.D. Degree or equivalent international degree

Preferred Qualifications (By start date):

  • Demonstrated experience in the field of cyanobacterial physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology
  • Demonstrated culture scale-ups (photobioreactor work) for product generation and quantification
  • A minimum of five years of post degree research experience


This position reports to Professor Melis in the Plant and Microbial Biology department. The initial appointment will be at 100% time for one year with the possibility of extension based on performance and availability of funding.

Salary and Benefits: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on UC Berkeley Project Scientist series salary scale. This position provides full benefits.
