The Department of Computer Science at the University of Chicago is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Clinical Professor of Computer Science to teach in the Masters Program in Computer Science (MPCS, https://masters.cs.uchicago.edu) and the MS in Computational Analysis and Public Policy (CAPP, https://capp.uchicago.edu/). The appointment will be for a term of up to three years, renewable. This is a full-time career-track position with potential progression, competitive salary, and benefits. 

This is a teaching position with no research responsibilities, and a teaching load of six courses across three academic quarters of the year (Autumn, Winter, Spring). The person holding this position will focus on teaching introductory and intermediate programming classes in Python and/or Databases classes, but will also have the option of teaching additional classes in their field of expertise. Fields of particular interest to both the MPCS and CAPP programs include Computer Systems (e.g., Computer Networks, Distributed Systems, Parallel Programming, etc.), Machine Learning, Web Development, Mobile Development, Cloud Computing, and Big Data Architectures.  

The Masters Program in Computer Science (MPCS) offers a comprehensive and professionally-oriented computer science education that combines the foundations of computer science with the applied and in-demand skills necessary for careers in technology, and is targeted for students interested in tech careers in Software Engineering, Data Analytics, Product Management and Application Development. 

MSCAPP is a professionally-oriented program offered jointly by the Department of Computer Science and the Harris School of Public Policy, and is designed for students seeking to leverage the power of technology and data science within the field of public policy. Through a highly interdisciplinary curriculum and opportunities for applied experience, students build expertise across the realms of computer science, data science, statistics, and public policy analysis, and ultimately embark on a career using modern tools to make a positive social impact within the public and non-profit sector.  

Courses in both programs are held for nine weeks during each academic quarter, with the tenth week for a final project or exam. Instruction is expected to be primarily in person, with some limited opportunities to offer remote or hybrid courses.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • One of the following:

    • A doctorate in Computer Science or a related field at the time of appointment.

    • A master's degree and 4 years of relevant professional experience.

    • A bachelor's degree and 8 years of relevant professional experience.

  • Teaching experience in Computer Science or a related field at the undergraduate or graduate level, as either an instructor of record or a teaching assistant.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Work experience in a computing-related industry.
