Assistant Professor and Canada Research Chair Tier 2 in Plant Integrated Pest Management

McGill University

Canada

Position description

The Department of Plant Science of McGill University’s Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences invites applications for a tenure track position at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor, in the area of integrated management of agricultural pests including microbes, arthropods and/or weeds. McGill’s Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is located on the Macdonald Campus, 30 km from the city of Montreal, where there is a concentration of life sciences and pharmaceutical companies. The Campus comprises 650 hectares of farm and forested lands, experimental field stations and state-of-the-art student learning facilities (library and computer laboratories). Additional information concerning McGill, the Faculty, and the Department of Plant Science can be found on their respective web sites (www.mcgill.ca, www.mcgill.ca/macdonald, www.mcgill.ca/plant). If the successful candidate satisfies the specific eligibility conditions of the program, the candidate may be supported by the University for nomination to a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Plant Integrated Pest Management which provides protected time for research within a full-time academic appointment. Tier 2 Chairs are for emerging researchers (individuals who are no more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree). However, career interruptions (e.g. maternity or parental leave, extended sick leave, clinical training, family care, etc.) may be taken into consideration using the Tier 2 justification process to review the candidate’s eligibility. Potential applicants who are more than 10 years from their highest degree with career interruptions may contact the institution to have their eligibility reviewed through the Tier 2 justification process. The eligibility conditions for the CRC chairs are described at http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/

Job Duties

The successful candidate is expected to develop a research program in agronomy and/or horticulture with an emphasis on the integrated management of key pests affecting the production of local agronomic and/or horticultural crops. The research program should address how the combination of multiple pest management strategies can be used to reduce pest pressure on crops while reducing the overall use of pesticides. It is favourable if the incumbent has a research interest in large-scale phenotyping, as this is an area of expansion within the department. The incumbent is expected to teach “Pesticides in Agriculture” and “Weed Biology and Control”, which are core courses in the Faculty’s undergraduate program, as well as a graduate course within his/her area of research expertise. Participation in Departmental, Faculty, and University committees and with provincial organizations is expected.

Qualifications and Education requirements

Ph.D. in Crop Science, Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Pathology, or related field; track record and demonstrated research excellence; ability to develop research collaborations with both private and public sectors. Knowledge of French is expected, as is eligibility for Ordre des Agronomes du Quebec (OAQ) membership.
