Black Hills State University invites applicants for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor position in Biology beginning August 2019.

The successful candidate will teach General Biology and courses in an area of specialization at the undergraduate level. The ideal candidate will have evidence of successful teaching, participate in student support and service activities in the School of Natural Sciences, contribute to research activities involving undergraduate students, take advantage of the scientific opportunities at BHSU, and serve as a research mentor in programs such as the Master of Science in Integrative Genomics program and South Dakota-Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (SD-BRIN).


  • PhD preferred, ABD considered in one of the biology or closely related fields.

The School of Natural Sciences at Black Hills State University is a vibrant, growing division with approximately 23 faculty members in biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental physical science. Faculty emphasize undergraduate teaching and advising, and conduct research involving students in several well-equipped laboratories on campus, in addition to the Black Hills State University Underground Campus (BHUC) at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, SD. The Center for the Conservation of Biological Resources is a shared research laboratory containing research space and commonly used equipment required for genetics and genomics research. WestCore is a Genetics/Genomics sequencing core facility that provides services including NextGen genome, transcriptome, and Sanger sequencing, genotyping, and quantitative real-time PCR services; WestCore also houses a cell culture area and an RNA isolation room. The BHUC houses Sanford Lab’s low-background counting facility, a class-1,000 cleanroom, and an adjoining workspace available for use in a variety of disciplines. Managed by BHSU, the underground campus partners with groups around the globe to create unique opportunities for collaborative research in physics, chemistry, biology and geophysics.
