The Department of English at the University of Washington, located on the unceded land and waters of the Coast Salish peoples, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in TESOL and Critical Applied Linguistics. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.  The successful candidate will participate as a core faculty member in an antiracist and award-winning MATESOL program, helping to re-envision the program moving forward, as well as contribute to a robust Language and Rhetoric program that includes a racially diverse faculty who work in translingualism, composition studies, rhetoric, language policy, and literacy studies. Teaching opportunities will include classes in our graduate and undergraduate programs, which may include courses on language education theory and pedagogy, research methods, teaching methods, critical language assessment, discourse analysis, and introduction to English language. This position has an anticipated start date of Autumn 2021 and will have a 9-month service period.


Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in English, Education, Applied Linguistics, Second Language Studies, or a related field, or foreign equivalent, by the start of the appointment.  Successful candidates must have TESOL-focused teaching experience or a documented record of TESOL-focused research centered in critical applied linguistics, including for instance race and identity, queer theory, feminist theory, antiracist practice, decolonizing pedagogies, abolitionist teaching, social justice education, anti-oppressive pedagogies, or closely related work. Successful candidates should demonstrate a record of innovative and effective teaching; a pattern of research and teaching rooted in social justice commitments; a commitment to ongoing professional and scholarly development, broadly conceived; and active participation in departmental, university, or professional service.

Applicants are encouraged to describe in their cover letter and demonstrate throughout their materials how their scholarship, teaching, service, and/or mentoring contribute to antiracism, decolonization, or social justice.
