Dakota State University (DSU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Digital Sound Design, effective August 2019. We are seeking an energetic and experienced individual who has the right talents and skills to teach digital sound design and recording arts courses for students in the Digital Sound Design track of the well-established Digital Arts and Design (DAD) major. The courses may include students from other tracks in DAD(Computer Graphics, Film and Cinematic Arts, and Production Animation), as well as interested students from other majors such as Computer Game Design, Computer Science, and English for New Media.


A successful candidate will demonstrate passion for hands-on instruction and will be able to teach courses on topics including: live sound, recording, audio production, and electroacoustic sound creation. Assigned courses would also address relevant hardware, software, and signal processing topics.


DSU and the College of Arts & Sciences are student centered and committed the success of the university’s undergraduates. The successful candidate is expected to provide service to the university and department through committee assignments, curriculum development, student advising, recruiting/retention activities, and to demonstrate a commitment to student learning.


The successful candidate will possess advanced recording and production skills. A candidate should have strong practical skills, such as session and song design, tracking, mixing, basic mastering, audio post production, and studio management. A genuine desire to help students excel in the recording arts industry is essential.


Minimum Qualifications:
• a terminal degree in music, music management, or a related field;
• relevant industry experience in studio recording and who has recording credits;
• demonstrated ability to teach topics in the Digital Sound Design specialization;
• two or more years post-secondary teaching experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
• demonstrated professional accomplishment and scholarly research;
• ability to work collaboratively within the department, college, and university;
• communication and interpersonal skills to mentor students’ both creatively and technically.


The successful applicant will join the College of Arts and Sciences and will report directly to the Dean. The College of Arts and Sciences offers undergraduate degrees in Mathematics and Mathematics Education, Biology and Biology Education, Physical Sciences, Digital Arts and Design, Computer Game Design, English for New Media, English Education and Respiratory Care.


Applications should include: a cover letter, CV/dossier, teaching philosophy statement, statement of creative and scholarly interests, copy of transcripts of highest degree earned, three professional references, up to 20 creative/scholarly work examples, and up to 20 examples of student work.

The Digital Arts and Design major at Dakota State recognizes that the media landscape is an increasingly expanding and shifting endeavor. We provide a strong foundation in art and design theory capable of traversing the changing field of media arts. Specializations in the Digital Arts and Design major are intended to contribute to the growth of an integrated creative.
