Assistant Professor in Teaching English as a Second Language

The Department of Educational Psychology invites applications for a full-time tenure track position at the assistant professor level in the area of Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL).

Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful applicant will contribute to both the TESL and Bachelor of Education(B.Ed.) programs. The TESL program offers diploma, MEd and PhD routes with a focus on adult ESL. The B.Ed. program focuses on preparing K-12 teachers to support English language learners in schools. Responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, mentoring graduate students, participating in the academic and administrative activities of the department and engaging in research and service.

We are especially interested in candidates who can complement the existing strengths in TESL at the University of Alberta and who have a record of scholarly productivity. The ideal candidate will have significant training/experience in two or more of the following areas of scholarship:

  • instructed second language acquisition
  • second language pedagogy
  • English for academic purposes
  • teaching second language pronunciation
  • technology-enhanced language teaching
  • immigrant settlement issues
  • English language learners in schools


  • PhD in TESL, applied linguistics, or a closely related field from a university of recognized standing.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out research in the applicant's major areas of specialization, as evidenced by publications.
  • Experience in teaching English as a second or foreign language.
  • Familiarity with a variety of educational contexts such as adult education and K-12.
  • Eligibility for certification by TESL Canada at Professional Standard 3.
  • Experience teaching university-level courses.
