The Department of Humanities, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Technological Humanities and Critical Practice at the Assistant Professor level, to commence July 1, 2023. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

By July 1, 2023, a PhD is required in a field of interdisciplinary Humanities scholarship related to Technological Humanities, such as Digital Humanities, Digital Culture Studies, or Science and Technology Studies, with a demonstrated record of excellence or promise of excellence for junior appointment in research and in teaching.

The successful candidate should have a clearly articulated program of research that speaks to social justice and expressive practices in the Technological Humanities, understood as including, but not being limited to, Digital Humanities. They will demonstrate a variety of interdisciplinary approaches to the Technological Humanities, with a special emphasis on the ways that technologies have mediated social relations in historical and contemporary cultural practices such as media activism, research creation, social, gender, and environmental justice movements, and decolonial and anti-racism efforts. Engagement with technological, cultural, and linguistic practices outside North America, preferably the Global South, is particularly welcome, as are interdisciplinary approaches that include religion, history, literature, history of art and architecture, film and media studies, music, and other expressive and aesthetic practices.

The successful candidate will contribute to the enhancement of the Facultys and Departments research strength and reputation in the stream of Digital, Technological, Natural Worlds, understood as the critical examination of the complex entanglements of knowledge of nature with technological tools and media across a diversity of cultural and historical settings. Special consideration will be given to candidates whose research meaningfully connects to experiential learning and who will attract students by touching on their lived experience while also connecting these experiences to humanistic historical and textual study.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence as demonstrated in the research statement; a record of publications (or forthcoming publications) in appropriate academic venues; presentations at major conferences; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees of high standing and expertise.

The Dean is able to offer enhanced research support for the first three years of this appointment.

The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching. The successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence for junior appointment in teaching will be provided through the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations, including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference.
