This position will support the Department of Chemistry’s efforts to redesign the general chemistry laboratories to better integrate with the lecture course, foster an inquiry-based approach to learning in the chemistry laboratory, and introduce students to how to think like a scientist. Initially the Fellow will work closely with the general chemistry laboratory redesign team to develop and implement course content. The Fellow will then serve as Instructor of Record for the redesigned labs in a Spring 2024 semester pilot with the responsibility of training and supervising graduate teaching assistants and undergraduate course assistants.
Outcomes of the first year redesign effort include:
· Creation of one-hour CH104M and CH104N labs that are integrated with CH301 and CH302 lecture courses
· Development of a pedagogy consistent with the college curriculum redesign values focused on inquiry and data analysis and scale
· Launch of a 300-student pilot for the 2023-24 academic year
The Chemistry Education Fellow will be hired and supervised by the Department of Chemistry Associate Chair for Undergraduate education and the Director of General Chemistry labs. The first year of support for the position will be provided by a grant from College of Natural Sciences Office of STEM Education Excellence but it is anticipated that the position will evolve into a recurring teaching position funded by the instructional budget.
