Description:
The Department of Communication Studies at the University of Texas at Austin seeks applications for a full-time tenure-track assistant professor in Organizational Communication and Technology. The department is part of Moody College of Communication, ranked #1 among public universities in Communication and Media Studies in the U.S. and #3 in the QS World University Rankings (2024). Moody College includes programs in Advertising and Public Relations, Journalism and Media, Radio-Television-Film, and Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences.

The Department of Communication Studies has strong graduate and undergraduate programs, supporting faculty in research, teaching, and leadership. Graduate studies are organized into three focal areas: Interpersonal Communication; Rhetoric, Language, and Political Communication; and Organizational Communication and Technology. Faculty often collaborate on research, teach a wide range of courses, and advise approximately 75 Ph.D. and M.A. students.

We welcome applicants with research and teaching expertise in organizational communication, including the study of technology. Methodological and theoretical orientations should complement and extend current work in the area, which includes networks, hybrid technological arrangements, AI and automation, crises and disasters, hidden organizations, temporality, decision making, democratic organizing, team dynamics, information processing, digitization, digital media, (in)visibility management, identity management, emergent and informal organizing, work-life balance, resilience, and wellbeing.

Faculty have access to pre- and post-award external funding support and opportunities to join research centers and institutes within Moody College. We are particularly interested in candidates whose scholarship addresses social impact for the public good, potentially aligning with units such as the Center for Media Engagement, the Technology and Information Policy Institute, and the Center for Health Communication. UT Austin also offers interdisciplinary opportunities through Grand Challenges initiatives such as Planet 2050, Good Systems (AI for Good), and Whole Communities, Whole Health.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. completed by the time of appointment.

  • Promising or established research and publication record in organizational communication.

  • Commitment to teaching excellence, advising, and mentoring graduate students.

  • Capacity to undertake collaborative research.

  • Potential to actively pursue and secure external funding is valued.
