The Department of Social Justice Education (SJE) at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto, invites applications for a full-time tenure-stream position in Indigenous Studies and Social Justice Education. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.
Applicants must have earned a PhD, EdD, or equivalent doctoral degree with a focus on Indigenous Studies and Education or a closely related field by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter. Candidates must demonstrate a record of excellence in both research and teaching and be able to complement and strengthen the department’s existing research and teaching profile. The successful candidate is expected to pursue innovative, independent research and establish a competitive, externally funded research program.
Preference will be given to candidates who self-identify as Indigenous. For the purposes of this search—aligned with U of T’s Response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission—“Indigenous” encompasses the peoples of Turtle Island (First Nations, Métis, Inuk/Inuit, Alaska Native, Native American, Native Hawaiian). Candidates identifying as Indigenous from other global contexts should clarify their relationship to specific Indigenous communities.
We seek a scholar with expertise in Indigenous Studies as they relate to Social Justice Education, with emphasis on decolonial and anti-racist approaches. We welcome candidates whose work is grounded in and accountable to specific Indigenous communities, especially those located on Turtle Island.

Decolonization
Indigenous sovereignty
Indigenous feminisms
Ecology and land stewardship
Indigenous social and political movements
The Abya-Yala (The Americas)
Global Indigeneities and solidarities
Applicants must also demonstrate how their work engages with education and educational research, broadly interpreted, within and beyond formal school settings, and in relation to Indigenous lands, waters, and life.

Research statement
Presentations at significant conferences
Awards and distinctions

The successful candidate will:
Teach and supervise a diverse body of graduate students (MA, MEd, PhD, EdD programs)
Contribute service to the Department, OISE, and the broader university community
Collaborate with related units across OISE and the University of Toronto
Foster an environment that acknowledges, respects, and celebrates diversity
Work effectively and collaboratively in inclusive academic settings
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
