The College of Islamic Studies (CIS) provides a unique platform for critical intellectual debates on Islam in a global context through its academic programs, immersive learning experience, and distinguished research division, which includes several research centers and clusters.
HBKU CIS is inviting applications for the position of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will conduct teaching, research, and service to contribute to HBKU’s goal of becoming a world-class research university and collaborate with faculty members and students to create a vibrant university community.
Conduct assigned courses or seminars to contribute to student learning.
Supervise independent study activities to guide students in achieving their academic and professional goals.
Serve as an academic advisor to students for course and research guidance.
Serve on and chair university and College committees.
Render service to the professional or lay community relevant to academic specialty.
Direct research programs of undergraduate/graduate students and advise on research matters.
Conduct research in the field of specialization and publish findings in scholarly journals or books.
Participate in curriculum development activities, including developing materials and instructional methods.
Seek funding support for research to enhance HBKU’s position as a leading research university.
Supervise research projects and theses to ensure student success.
Undertake other reasonable tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Ph.D. or terminal degree from an accredited university relevant to teaching field.
2–5 years of relevant full-time university teaching experience in research, higher education, or closely related industry areas (additional experience may demonstrate equivalency).
Evidence of teaching proficiency, student supervision, and curriculum/program development.
Research and scholarly achievements judged competent for the rank of Assistant Professor.
Participation in scholarly and academic affairs of a university, professional society, or organization.
Portfolio of scholarly endeavors (funded research grants, publications, IP/patents) comparable to peers at major research universities.
Evidence of growing regional and international reputation in the scholarly discipline.
Ability to work with diverse groups, cultures, and communities.
Support in developing networks and collaborations within HBKU and with program partners.
Teach graduate courses in the MA Program in Contemporary Islamic Studies and the PhD in Islamic Studies.
Ability to teach in English (Contemporary Islamic Thought track) and Arabic (Fiqh and Society track), or at least one language with proficiency in reading/writing the other.
Supervise master’s theses and PhD dissertations relevant to Contemporary Islamic Studies.
Proven record of publishing in high-ranking, Scopus-indexed academic journals.
Willingness to shape the curriculum and activities of the MA and PhD programs by identifying critical and neglected areas in contemporary Islamic thought.
Engagement with stakeholders in Qatar and the region, contributing to public education and community outreach.
