About the University

The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) was the first Sino-foreign university established in China, opening in 2004. The University offers a UK-style education and has grown to a student population of more than 10,000.

UNNC is seeking qualified and committed Course Tutors in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) to join the Centre for English Language Education (CELE).

About the Centre for English Language Education (CELE)

Since the establishment of the Nottingham Ningbo campus in 2004, the Centre for English Language Education (CELE) has aimed to promote high-quality English for Academic Purposes (EAP) teaching in support of academic programmes delivered in China.

With approximately 90 academic staff, CELE is recognized internationally and currently supports students through:

• UNNC Preliminary Year modules
• Presessional programmes
• Summer schools
• In-sessional language support
• Academic skills support programmes

Applications are invited from suitably qualified English language teaching professionals with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

• EAP/ESP teaching, including online teaching and support through Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs)
• EAP/ESP syllabus and curriculum design
• EAP/ESP assessment
• Teacher training (experience delivering internationally recognized qualifications such as CELTA, DELTA, or equivalent is preferred)

Requirements

Successful applicants must have:

• A completed MA/MSc in TESOL, ELT, Applied Linguistics, or an equivalent qualification.
• Evidence of an assessed teaching practicum within the degree.
• A recognized formal teaching qualification (if not included within the degree), such as:English as a first language or equivalent English language competence.

  • LTCL DipTESOL
  • Equivalent qualification

University foundation-level preparation and teaching experience where English is the medium of instruction is advantageous.

Tutors will primarily deliver intensive EAP classes and ongoing academic support. Depending on individual experience and expertise, opportunities may also exist to contribute to:

• Teacher training
• Curriculum development
• Assessment design
• ESP training programme design and delivery

Main Responsibilities

• Teach up to 18 hours per week on credit-bearing and support EAP/ESP courses.
• Spend approximately 14 hours per weekon:Participate in student assessments.
  • Lesson preparation
  • Marking
  • Student feedback
  • Administrative duties
  • Standardisation activities
  • Report writing
  • Attendance at course and general meetings
• Act as an examination invigilator when required.
• Provide pastoral and academic support through the University's personal tutorial system.
• Contribute to curriculum development and course management where appropriate.
• Participate in continuing professional development and staff development activities.

Person Specification (Essential)

Applicants should demonstrate:

• Completed MA/MSc in TESOL, ELT, Applied Linguistics, or equivalent, including an assessed teaching practicum.
• Recognized formal teaching qualification (if not included in the degree), for example:Confidence in language analysis and providing constructive feedback on spoken and written English.

  • PGCE/PGCertEd
• Ability to work collaboratively and teach according to agreed assessment criteria.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet administrative and marking deadlines.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Strong word-processing skills.
• Good IT skills, including experience using Virtual Learning Environments such as:English as a first language or equivalent English language competence.

• Substantial full-time EFL teaching experience together with significant EAP teaching experience (for example, UK university presessional teaching).

Remuneration, Benefits and Support

Salary will range from RMB 357,386 to RMB 487,079 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience.

International appointments include:

The appointment is offered initially on a three-year fixed-term contract, beginning February 2027.

All appointments are face-to-face in Ningbo, China, and employment contracts will be with the University of Nottingham Ningbo China.
