Position Description

The Department of Classics in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Ancient Greek Literature. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027.

This position is being advertised concurrently with the Associate Professor – Ancient Greek Literature position (Req 48737); however, only one appointment will be made. To be considered for this role and/or Associate Professor – Ancient Greek Literature (Req 48737), you must submit a separate application for each posting.

Requirements and Qualifications

Candidates must:

• Have earned a PhD in Classics or a related area by the time of appointment.
• Demonstrate a record of excellence in research and teaching.
• Outline a rigorous and innovative research program at the highest international level, supported by a track record appropriate to their career stage.
• Present clear evidence of the capacity to teach both undergraduate and graduate students at all levels.
• Be prepared to teach undergraduate translation-based courses in Ancient Greek literature and Ancient Greek language courses.
• Have expertise in at least one additional ancient language.
• Explain in the cover letter how they would complement and strengthen the existing departmental expertise.
• Demonstrate excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Show a commitment to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion within the discipline.

Evidence of Excellence in Research

Evidence may include:

• Refereed publications in top-ranked, field-relevant journals.
• Forthcoming publications meeting high international standards.
• Conference presentations.
• Research grants and awards appropriate to career stage.
• A research statement demonstrating ambition and innovation.
• Strong recommendation letters from referees of high standing.

Evidence of Excellence in Teaching

Evidence will be demonstrated through:

• Teaching accomplishments.
• Strong letters of reference.
• A teaching dossier submitted as part of the application.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

• Pursue innovative and independent research.
• Establish an outstanding, competitive, externally funded research program.
• Carry out assigned teaching duties.
• Contribute to departmental and university service.

Hiring Salary Range

• Expected salary: CAD $120,000–160,000 per year, depending on experience.
• Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.

Located in vibrant downtown Toronto, the Department of Classics is one of the largest and most diverse in North America. Committed to a capacious and pluralistic understanding of Classics, the Department encompasses all aspects of and approaches to Greco-Roman antiquity and is recognized for its excellence across the full chronological and methodological scope of the field.
