The Department of Biology conducts research and teaching in areas such as ecology, evolutionary biology, organismal biology, and molecular biology. The department employs ~300 staff, including ~70 doctoral students, and houses one of the world’s largest university collections of plants and animals.

This is a career-development position designed to develop independence as a researcher and educator. Resources corresponding to at least one doctoral studentship will be linked to the appointment.
Duties include:
Conduct research in molecular microbiology focusing on prokaryotes
Establish an independent research line of high international standard, elucidating molecular, cellular, or evolutionary mechanisms using prokaryotic genetic model systems
Actively seek external funding for research activities
Collaborate within the department, university, and external organizations
Teach, examine, and supervise students at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels (10–30% teaching workload)
Perform administrative and organizational tasks at departmental/faculty levels as required
PhD (or equivalent expertise) in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field
Scientific expertise in molecular microbiology of prokaryotes
Strong research credentials (high-quality publications)
Independent research profile with potential to obtain external funding
Postdoctoral experience outside the awarding university
Good pedagogical skills and teaching experience
Excellent English communication skills
