Position Description

The Department of Political Science in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Canadian Politics. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027.

Requirements and Qualifications

Candidates must:

• Hold a PhD in Political Science or a related discipline by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter.
• Demonstrate a record of excellence in research and teaching.
• Have research and teaching interests that contribute to the theoretical and empirical understanding of Canadian Politics or Canada in a comparative perspective.
• Be open to a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches.
• Demonstrate research and teaching interests that complement and strengthen the Department's existing expertise.
• Be prepared to teach undergraduate and graduate courses on the University of Toronto's St. George (Downtown Toronto) campus.
• Review the research and teaching profiles of current faculty members to understand existing departmental strengths.

Evidence of Excellence in Research

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence demonstrated through:

• Publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals.
• Forthcoming publications meeting high international standards.
• Presentations at significant conferences.
• A research statement outlining current and future research interests.
• Awards and accolades.
• Strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Evidence of Excellence in Teaching

Evidence of teaching excellence will be demonstrated through:

• Teaching accomplishments.
• A teaching dossier.
• Strong letters of reference.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

• Pursue innovative and independent research.
• Establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
• Undertake undergraduate and graduate teaching responsibilities.
• Carry out assigned departmental and university service duties.

Hiring Salary Range

• Expected salary: CAD $120,000–160,000 per year, depending on experience.
• Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.
