Summary Description

The Department of Radiology at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City invites applications for clinically experienced medical physicists in diagnostic imaging with focus on clinical MR physics. Responsibilities will primarily include acceptance testing; quality assurance surveys; new equipment specification and evaluation; image quality and protocol optimization; American College of Radiology (ACR) annual quality testing, MR physics education and MR safety expert (MRSE) support for clinical cases. In addition, the candidate will be expected to provide some clinical support for QA of ionizing radiation modalities (CT, general radiography, fluoroscopy etc.) and ultrasound to maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements. The position may also involve teaching of radiology residents, medical physics students as well as healthcare staff training. Since this position involves interaction with other departments, inspectors, and regulators, a candidate with strong interpersonal and communication skills is preferred. Salary and academic rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Columbia University Irving Medical Center consists of a main campus with a 1300 beds hospital located in Manhattan, a community hospital, and a number of satellite medical offices. The Department of Radiology facilities have state-of-the-art imaging equipment consisting of 15 MRI units, 10 CT scanners (3 Dual Energy CTs), 4 PET/CT scanners, 3 SPECT/CT, 11 special procedures suites, 25 fixed Radiography and R/F rooms, 10 digital mammography units, a large number of mobile radiographic and fluoroscopy units, and ultrasound units. In total, there are more than 175 X-ray tubes.

The diagnostic radiology physics group is comprised of two Ph.D. and five M.S. level physicists. ACR accreditation is maintained for mammography, MRI, ultrasound, and CT. Most of the equipment and facilities were recently modernized and new units are being purchased.

Minimum Degree Required

Minimum Qualifications
The position requires at least an M.S. degree in medical physics or a related field with at least 3 years of clinical experience. Certification in Diagnostic medical physics by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) is preferred. Magnetic Resonance Imaging Physics certification by the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP) is a plus. Experience with MATLAB or Python programming is desirable. The candidates must be eligible and committed to become licensed in NYS within 6-12 months in Diagnostic Radiologic Medical Physics. American Board of Magnetic Resonance Safety (ABMRS) MRSE or MRSO certification must be obtained within 1 year of the date of hire.
