Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) established the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) in 2016 with a vision to enrich society in Qatar and across the broader world with transformative educational and research experiences. The College provides graduate programs and research spanning the humanities and social sciences, focusing on intercultural communication, women and society, digital humanities, translation, and accessibility studies. In addition to five Master’s degree programs, the College currently offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Humanities and Social Sciences (College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) | HBKU).
HBKU’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences seeks applications for the position of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will advance the mission of the University through excellence in teaching and curriculum development at the graduate level. This position encompasses instruction in translation studies, audiovisual translation, accessibility, and disability studies, with particular focus on Arabic-speaking contexts.
The role requires a commitment to scholarly excellence through original research, pursuit of external funding opportunities, and mentorship of student research projects. The successful candidate will champion interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement initiatives that promote accessibility and inclusive communication practices.
Beyond the classroom, this position involves contributing to academic program development and building strategic partnerships with local, regional, and international organizations. The successful candidate will work to advance accessibility and inclusion across diverse linguistic, cultural, and media landscapes throughout Qatar and the wider Arab region, positioning HBKU as a leader in accessible communication research and practice.
Conduct assigned courses or seminars to contribute to student learning
Supervise independent study activities to guide students in achieving their academic and professional goals
Serve as academic advisor to students to guide them in the course and their selections
Serve on and chair university and College committees
Render service to the professional or lay community relevant to academic specialty
Direct research programs of undergraduate/graduate students and advise on research matters
Conduct research in the field of specialization and publish findings in scholarly journals or books
May serve on faculty committees dealing with such matters as curriculum planning and degree requirements, and perform a variety of administrative duties
Participate in curriculum development activities, including the development of curricular materials and special instructional methods to further improve the university/college teaching material
Conduct research or undertake comparable scholarly activity to contribute to HBKU becoming a leading research university
Supervise research projects and theses to ensure the success of the research projects and students
Seek funding support for research to help make HBKU a world-class research university
Other reasonable tasks as assigned by the supervisor
Ph.D. or terminal degree from an accredited university as required for teaching in certain fields
2-5 years of relevant full-time university teaching experience in research, higher education, or closely related areas in industry (additional experience may be required to show equivalency), with evidence of increasing professional maturity and productivity
Evidence of proficiency in teaching, student supervision, and curriculum and program development
Research and scholarly achievements judged competent and adequate for the rank of Assistant Professor in comparison with peers active in the same field at major research universities
Evidence of participation in the scholarly and academic affairs of a university or other appropriate organization, or in an appropriate professional society or organization
Portfolio of scholarly endeavors (funded research grants, publications, IP/patents, etc.) in comparison with peers active in the same field at a major research university
Evidence for an increasing regional and international reputation in the scholarly discipline
Ability to work with and exposure to diverse groups, cultures, and communities
Support in developing networks and collaboration within HBKU, and with program partners and branch campuses in both teaching and research activities
Knowledge of disability advocacy and inclusive practices in global and/or Arabic-speaking contexts
Evidence of interdisciplinary collaboration across translation studies, media accessibility, and disability studies
Awareness of accessibility legislation, policies, and cultural considerations affecting disability rights in the Arab world
