BMS is a one-year program designed to provide foundational training in biomedicine. The core curriculum focuses on the applications and innovations in clinical care and medical treatment, statistics, bioethics, and the American healthcare system. Students concentrate in Science Communication, Biomedical Data Science, Health Systems Science, Biomedical Innovation, Biological Sciences, and Biomedical Ethics, and complete an independent project under the supervision of faculty, and/or external professionals. Our current course offerings are here: https://www.biomedicalsciences.bsd.uchicago.edu/curriculum/.
Appointees will teach 4-6 courses per academic year in addition to substantial mentoring and service responsibilities. Their courses include a required core course, a graduate-level seminar on grant writing, and biomedical sciences electives according to program need. In addition, appointees will advise students on their independent research projects and quarterly course selection, serving as first and second readers on projects, and providing broad academic and professional guidance to a cohort of master’s students in weekly office hours. They also closely advise students and alumni who are applying to postgraduate programs. Other non-classroom duties include participating in admissions and recruiting as well as other co-curricular academic programming. They hire and manage teaching assistants and contribute to program operations, participate in pedagogy workshops, and our annual student poster conference. This is a full-time, career-track teaching position. The initial three-year appointment will begin in Academic Year 2026-2027 and is renewable with opportunity for promotion.
