Assistant Professorship in European Union Law

An assistant professorship is vacant within the research project ‘In times of crisis: Access to justice in the European Union’ at the Department of Law, Aarhus University.

The starting date is 1 November 2019 or subject to mutual agreement.

Research Project 
Access to justice and judicial remedies for individuals and other legal entities invoking European Union law is increasingly coming under greater scrutiny. Both the widening and deepening of Union law has meant differentiated standards of judicial review. With the EU being the only supranational system of providing access to justice for individuals through judicial remedy at the time of its creation, the Union has had to self-explore the concept of access to justice, and construe locus standi as being narrow, broad, or somewhere in between. By exploring access to justice issues in the widened and deepened field of EU law, this research project, under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), Graham Butler, will assess, analyse, and critique the most pressing issues on access to justice in the EU legal order.

Job Description 
The assistant professorship position involves research, teaching, and administration obligations. Principally, the position is aimed at candidates who will be able to contribute to the research and teaching environment of the department, with emphasis on research-based teaching in European law.

For the research project, some of the tasks will include preparing, undertaking, and supporting the project’s programme, including, coordinating the research project’s activities, and contributing to the dissemination of the project, and other associated roles. At the Department of Law at Aarhus University, we offer the opportunity to be part of a research team that has a significant emphasis on publishing its research in international peer-reviewed journals.

The position is fixed-term, and is three-years of duration from the date the successful candidate takes up the position.

Qualification Requirements 
Applicants should hold a PhD in law, or be able to demonstrate proof of being about to complete it. Records of published research prior to the application may be regarded as an advantage, and experience outside of legal research may be considered relevant for candidates applications. However, the combined portfolio, enthusiasm, and determination of the candidate will be taken into consideration in order to find the best match for the position/team.

No teaching experience is necessary for the position, but given that the position does involve teaching on the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree that the university offers, the successful candidate shall participate in a pedagogical programme for Assistant Professors run by the university to complement their teaching at the Department of Law.

The university actively encourages academic staff with little or no knowledge of written and oral Danish language proficiency the chance to learn the language and supports efforts to acquire Danish linguistic skills, although Danish language skills are not a prerequisite for applying for the position.

The Department of Law is one of the six departments at Aarhus BSS, one of the four faculties at Aarhus University. The appointment is made in accordance with the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Danish Universities as well as the circular on the Collective Agreement for Academics Employed by the State (in Danish).
