The GLOBE Institute invites applications for two assistant professorships in planetary sciences at the Centre for Star and Planet Formation starting January 2020 or soon thereafter.


The Centre for Star and Planet Formation is a multidisciplinary research centre focused on understanding the formation of planetary systems, including the Solar System, using a multidisciplinary approach that combines astronomy, astrophysics and cosmochemistry. GLOBE institute is a newly established department at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. Globe aims for interdisciplinary research, teaching and outreach and therefore has a strong focus on developing transformative science across our planet’s history.

Job description

The candidates are expected to lead original scientific research addressing a broad range of fundamental questions in planetary sciences, including the formation history of the Solar System, early evolution of solids and asteroidal bodies and, lastly, accretion and differentiation history of rocky planets. In particular, we expect candidates to take full advantage of the the state-of-the-art isotope facilities that the institution offers to pursue innovative research and develop new approaches for high-precision isotope ratio measurements in extraterrestrial material. The candidate will be expected to secured external funding to build a research group.


The assistant professors’ responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination

  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination

  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of students

  • Securing external funds


Required qualification
The successful applicants must document a strong research track record in the field of cosmochemistry, including publication in top-tier journals as first author, strong international network and the potential to secure external funds and lead a research group.


Specific qualifications
The successful candidate must have extensive experience in:

  • Clean laboratories techniques

  • Plasma source and thermal ionization mass spectrometry

  • Preparation, characterization and analysis of extraterrestrial materials

  • Development of innovative methods for investigation of extraterrestrial materials

The assistant professors are also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.


Terms of employment
Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2013.
