Position description

Assistant Project Scientist - Department of Physics - University of California, Berkeley.

The Department of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for two Assistant Project Scientists in the area of experimental particle and nuclear physics. The expected start date is Spring-Summer 2021. This is a full-time, 100% appointment.

As part of the Orebi Gann Research Group in the Physics Department at UC Berkeley, the Assistant Project Scientist will serve as a leadership role in developing the concept for a hybrid optical neutrino detector, capable of using both Cherenkov and scintillation signals for advanced event reconstruction and particle identification. This will involve both technical demonstrations, working with the local CHESS detector and other apparatus to demonstrate the capabilities and properties of advanced scintillators and photon detectors, and development of analysis tools to leverage these capabilities for maximal physics impact. The Assistant Project Scientist will develop new frameworks for advanced simulation studies to probe the physics reach of a range of detector designs. There is also the option for involvement in the SNO+ and AIT/NEO experiments. SNO+ is a multi-purpose neutrino detector, which will soon be filled with liquid scintillator, and offers a rich program of physics in the near future. AIT/NEO will be a water or water-based scintillator detector aimed at demonstrating remote reactor monitoring using antineutrinos.

Job responsibilities will also include the development of new analysis tools, simulation frameworks, and leadership of technical demonstrations. The candidate will be expected to interpret results in light of a range of physics and nonproliferation goals. Additionally, the candidate will take a senior leadership role in the research group, and work with junior members to facilitate their work.

Basic qualifications: (must be met at the time of application):
Ph.D. or equivalent international degree.

Additional qualifications: (must be met by the start date of the job):
Five years of work experience post Ph.D.

Preferred qualifications:
Research in experimental particle or nuclear physics with an emphasis on neutrino experiments and optical detectors. Experience in developing strong working relationships and collaborating with diverse team members.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary range: $70,000 to $74,300 (full-time, 100% rate). Starting salary will be commensurate with experience. For information on UC Benefits, please visit:
