30% Project scientist position (12/1/2020 to 11/30/2021)

The UCD laboratory of wheat molecular genetics and wheat improvement directed by Dr. J. Dubcovsky is looking for a highly motivated individuals for a 30% Project scientist position (12/1/2020 to 11/30/2021) to make significant and creative contributions to our research on the molecular regulation of wheat flowering. Candidates must have a PhD in molecular genetics, demonstrated research experience in wheat and extensive knowledge of wheat molecular pathways involved in heading time regulation, including the photoperiod and vernalization pathways. The selected candidate should have experience in the generation of vectors and sgRNA for gene editing and in the analysis of mutants and transgenic wheat plants using qRT-PCR and RNAseq. The selected candidate should have demonstrated experience in the generation of genome specific molecular markers for each of the wheat genomes and in the design of qRTPCR systems to evaluate the expression of separate homeolog for targeted wheat genes.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

I. RESEARCH (%)

Research activity (70%)
This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of an active research program investigating the molecular mechanism regulating heading time in wheat. The appointee will analyzed sequenced EMS mutants, generate new mutations through CRIPR and develop genetic populations to establish the role of different flowering genes and their epistatic interactions in the regulation of heading time and spike development. The appointee will characterize the expression profiles of the different mutants and edited plants through qRT-PCR and RNASeq and will generate constructs for overexpression and silencing of target genes. The appointee will establish protein-protein interactions for the candidate genes using yeast-two-hybrid, fluorescence complementation and coIP. The candidate will help to determine research goals in consultation with the Principal Investigator. He/she will design specific projects, including the selection of appropriate methods and techniques. The candidate may supervise undergrad students of lab technicians for technical aspects of the research, including methods development, trouble-shooting problems, interpreting results and planning follow-up experiments.

Publication (10%)
The candidate will publish research results in peer-reviewed journals, books and other outlets either independently or in collaboration with the PI or other members of the research team.

Grant Acquisition (10%)
The candidate will assist in acquiring proposals for funding from federal and state agencies and other funding organizations. The candidate will prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies. The candidate will prepare preliminary results for grant applications.

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5%)
The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to his/her specific field and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate. The candidate will attend seminars to present research results and may give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups. The candidate will give presentations at seminars and laboratory meetings.

III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5%)
The candidate will contribute to public outreach activities that include presenting scientific research results to the general public and providing relevant advice to individuals and public agencies. The candidate will engage in University service activities such as guest lecturing and committee service. Teaching classroom courses is not an expectation of this position.

Minimum qualifications.
a. The candidate must have a PhD in molecular genetics
b. The candidate must have at least one year of experience working in wheat molecular genetics or genomics
c. The candidate needs to have demonstrated experience in wheat DNA extractions, marker development (including KASP markers), expression analysis and basic biochemical skills (yeast two hybrid and fluorescent complementation)
d. The candidate should be able to analyze DNA and protein sequences and have basic bioinformatics and statistics training
e. The candidate should be able to communicate in oral and written form in English.

Preferred qualifications
f. The candidate must have extensive knowledge of wheat genetics and of the molecular pathways involved in heading time regulation, including the photoperiod and the vernalization pathways.
g. The selected candidate should have experience in the generation of vectors and sgRNA for gene editing and in the analysis of mutants and transgenic wheat plants using qRT-PCR and RNAseq.
h. The selected candidate should have demonstrated experience in the generation of genome specific molecular markers for each of the wheat genomes and in the design of qRTPCR systems to evaluate the expression of separate homeolog for targeted wheat genes.
i. The selected candidate should have demonstrated experience in wheat crosses, growing of wheat plants and sowing and planting wheat lines and populations in the field.
