Position description

The UC Berkeley Department of Chemistry seeks applications for an Assistant Project Scientist.

The Whaley group research is divided into four areas: quantum information processing, quantum many-body systems, quantum measurement and control, and quantum biology. There are several points of overlap between these areas, deriving from relationships between advanced quantum simulation methods that we develop and employ to make numerical studies of specific problems and systems in each topic.

The Assistant Project Scientist will be working on the following:

  • Research on time-dependent electronic structure methods for strongly correlated electronic systems under external driving fields in molecular and extended systems, including embedding techniques.
  • Work with graduate students in these areas, participate in writing of proposals, preparation of reports and presentations.
  • Give presentations on the research at meetings and project reviews.


Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
    • PhD (or equivalent international degree)
Preferred qualifications
    • PhD (or equivalent international degree) in Chemistry or Physics
    • 5 years of Postdoctoral Scholar or PhD-related research experience
    • Knowledge of electronic structure theory
    • Expertise in wave function-based methods including coupled cluster and selective configuration interaction
    • Experience with embedding methods, impurity solvers, and Green’s function techniques.
    • Ability to work independently, to train and work with graduate students, make presentations and contribute to grant proposals.
