The UCLA Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering (JIFRESSE) invites applications for a position in the professional research series at the rank of Assistant Researcher. Research emphasis will be on topics of human and climate stresses on the global carbon and water cycles. The successful candidate will lead research into the application of statistical methods, machine learning algorithms to detection and attribution of carbon emissions and removals of global terrestrial ecosystems. The research involves using a variety of ground and satellite-based observation datasets and GHG inventory data to identify and understand large-scale changes of carbon stored in terrestrial ecosystems under climate change and increasing land use activities, with a particular focus on carbon and water cycle as an interconnected system.

Required qualifications include: Candidates must have the following qualification: 1) PhD in one of the earth science disciplines or in related fields in physics and applied mathematics, and minimum of two years of post-PhD research in relevant fields, 2) extensive knowledge of remote sensing observations and techniques, 3) demonstrable expertise in the quantitative big data analysis including machine learning techniques, and 4) excellent written and verbal communication skills.
