ASSISTANT SPECIALIST POSITION

Location: UC Davis main campus

Description:

An Assistant Specialist position is available in the lab of Dr. David J. Segal (https://biology.ucdavis.edu/people/david-segal). The position of Specialist has a narrow focus in a specialized area and provides technical or specialized expertise. The Specialist stays apprised of emerging issues and problems and maintains technical competence in the designated area of specialization. Within this defined area and when appropriate, the Specialist is expected to provide expertise, facilitate teamwork, develop collaborative relationships with colleagues, and supply input into the planning and conduct of research. Specialists are not expected to have their own independent research program and hence do not have principal investigator (PI) or co-investigator status by virtue of title. While not an expectation, Specialists may request PI status as an exception to policy and/or may collaborate with a PI in preparing research proposals for extramural funding.

An Assistant Specialist appointee should possess expertise consistent with four to six years of training and/or experience in the relevant area of research and specialization. Appropriate qualifications for appointees at this rank would include possession of a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline, or possession of a relevant Bachelor’s degree plus three or more years of research experience. The Assistant Specialist is evaluated for merit and promotion every two years using the three basic criteria outlined below.

Research in a Specialized Area (85%)

In direct collaboration with the Principal Investigator, this position will be involved in the use of rodent models of neurologic disorders to evaluate novel molecular therapies. In particular, the Angelman syndrome research project focuses on developing therapeutics based on gene and epigenome editing tools to treat Angelman syndrome and related neurologic disorders. The candidate will specifically participate in the testing of novel molecular constructs based on zinc fingers, TALEs, or CRISPR/Cas9 in mouse and rat animal models of Angelman syndrome. As a member of the research team, work will include injections of protein, virus, and cell-based therapeutics, necropsy, tissue sectioning, immunostaining, genotyping, and breeding of rodents. The candidate will also assist in the preparation of manuscripts for publications, in collaboration with her/his direct supervisor, describing results and methods used to acquire the results, presenting and analyzing data obtained by the candidate, and constructing clear and informative figures.

Professional Competence (10%)

Depending on interest and availability of funds, the Assistant Specialist will have opportunities to present research findings to a larger audience at scientific conferences or meetings. The candidate will also assist the investigator in presenting progress reports and final summaries to granting agencies, participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organization, and review research proposals, journal manuscripts and publications related to the area of expertise.

University and Public Service (5%)

The Assistant Specialist will participate in training activities, such as mentoring undergraduate students. They will actively contribute to lab activities via meetings and unit/campus presentations. The Assistant Specialist may maintain liaison and respond to the needs of various industry organizations, state and federal agencies, and other external groups on issues related to the area of expertise.

Qualifications:

The applicant must have a MS degree in Pharmacology, Molecular Genetics, Neuroscience or related discipline involving the use of rodent animal models, or possession of a relevant Bachelor’s degree plus three or more years of research experience. Experience performing husbandry, breeding practices, post-operative care, behavioral monitoring, and surgical procedures in an ABSL2 mouse vivarium. Experience testing molecular therapies (nucleic acids, proteins, viral vectors, lipo-particles) in animal models of neurologic disorders.
