The Department of Ophthalmology & Vision Science at UC Davis School of Medicine is seeking a part-time or fulltime Assistant Specialist to work in the Laboratory of Robert J. Zawadzki, Ph.D., principal investigator on translational research projects involving retinal cell biology, nanotechnology, and ophthalmic imaging.

The laboratory is located in Tupper Hall on the UC Davis campus.
Appointees to the Assistant Specialist rank should possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or five years of experience demonstrating expertise in the relevant specialization. Specialist series: non-State funded non-tenured appointment of one to three year depending on rank: (see https://aadocs.ucdavis.edu/policies/apm/apm-330.pdf).

Responsibilities of this position will include research activity (70%), publication (15%) and professional competence and activity (15%). A successful candidate will participate in lab activities, particularly around issues of image processing, innovative programming for data acquisition, processing and presentation, as well as statistical analysis. For example, the incumbent will help with design of in vivo and ex vivo mouse experiments. This will be done in collaboration with PIs specializing in specific mouse models.

The ideal candidate will also have strong skills in some combination of retinal/microscopic imaging modalities, including OCT, SLO, multispectral imaging, fluorescence microscopy, etc. Knowledge of programming languages (e.g. LabView, Matlab or Python) for maintaining and development of image acquisition and processing software and/or ability to assemble custom optical instruments is essential. Prior experience with animal handling is required and successful candidate is expected to be able to perform terminal microsurgeries for tissue sample collection. Strong interpersonal skills in communication and writing; as well as the ability to work independently or in a team are expected as well. US citizenship is not required. Depending on the interest and availability of funds, the Assistant Specialist will have opportunities to present research findings to a larger audience at scientific conferences or meetings. The incumbent will also assist the principal investigator in presenting progress reports and final summaries to granting agencies as well as lab meetings with other investigators.

The Assistant Specialist will mentor undergraduate students from UC Davis. He/She will actively contribute to lab activities through staff meetings and presentations to colleagues and researchers from various scientific communities.
