Position description

The UCLA Department of Psychology seeks to hire a full-time tenure-track Assistant or tenured early Associate Professor with expertise in computational modeling. We are interested in applicants pursuing innovative research in computational analyses of behavioral and/or neural data to achieve a more mechanistic, quantitative account of information processing in the human mind and brain. Possible areas of expertise include, but are not limited to, advanced computational modeling methods that link psychology and cognitive science with artificial intelligence (e.g., Bayesian modeling, deep neural network modeling), computational neuroscience including applications in psychopathology, and modeling with big data. The successful candidate should add to the Department’s existing strengths in computational, quantitative, and behavioral methods, and preference will be given to individuals whose methodological specialization has broad application and potential connections to ongoing research throughout the Department and the University. Potential applicants should note that the Department is also conducting a search for an individual with quantitative psychology expertise.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in psychology, neuroscience, a related computational modeling discipline (e.g., statistics, computer science), or a related social science or behavioral science field no later than one year after hire. Applicants should demonstrate a strong track record of productive and impactful research. In addition to an outstanding record of research and potential for extramural research support, the successful candidate will demonstrate a history of, or the potential for, contributing to the teaching, mentoring, service, and equity/diversity/inclusion missions of the Department and University.

Computational modeling faculty are involved in collaborations with researchers within the Department of Psychology and across campus. UCLA offers a vibrant academic community with an abundance of collaborative opportunities. UCLA has a wealth of computational modeling expertise, including research groups in computer science, statistics, biostatistics, neuroscience, sociology, anthropology, and computational biosciences. UCLA recently unveiled a campus-wide DataX initiative to leverage advances in data science and AI to transform research, creative activities, and education across disciplines. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to contribute to computationally-focused training, including through the Department's PhD specialization in Computational Cognition, its rapidly growing Cognitive Science undergraduate major, and UCLA's Computational Neuroscience Affinity Group.

The Division of Life Sciences at UCLA strongly values and rewards faculty with a demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students from underrepresented and/or underserved groups; applicants are encouraged to highlight their experience and commitment to advancing the success of these groups in their cover letter and/or within the other application materials. We particularly encourage applications from women and individuals from ethnicities and identities historically excluded in some institutions of higher education. UCLA has programs to assist in partner employment, childcare, schooling, and other family concerns. For additional information, visit http://www.ucla.edu/faculty.

Review of applications will begin as soon as they are received and will continue until the position is filled or closed. In order to receive full consideration, candidates are urged to apply before October 15, 2021. Applications should include a cover letter, a CV, at least 3 letters of recommendation, 3 relevant publications, and separate statements of research goals, approach to teaching, and contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion (no more than 3 pages each). Applications may be submitted to https://recruit.apo.ucla.edu/JPF06739. Requests for information should be sent to the search committee at searchcommittee@psych.ucla.edu (include JPF06739 in the subject).
