The Faculty of Education and Psychology, Department of Teacher Education is seeking to recruit a candidate for the position of

Assistant / Associate Professor in Guidance and Study Counselling, tenure track

The position starts on the 1st of December 2021 or as soon as possible after that.  

Tasks and qualifications

The assistant / associate professor is responsible for research, teaching and development tasks related to the research area of guidance and study counselling. We expect the assistant / associate professor to conduct international level scientific research. We are looking for an applicant whose research has links to current areas of strength of the faculty and department of teacher education in the field of the call. The assistant/associate professor is also expected to be capable to renew and develop the field of the call as an educational discipline. 

As the current position is situated in the Department of Teacher Education it has connections to the department’s broader development of teacher education, education in the guidance field, continuous education, and student consultation (e.g. wellbeing and career guidance, lifelong guidance). In accordance with the University of Jyvaskyla policy of high quality guidance model guidance is seen as holistic, multichannel activity with requires transversal and multiprofessional cooperation.The department has both a qualification programme and Master’s programme which prepare professionals for guidance and study counselling in educational contexts, i.e., comprehensive, upper secondary, vocational and higher tertiary education, and provide foundations for related work in the broader field of guidance. The qualification programme produces competences for professionals responsible for guidance and study counselling supporting the development of students’ study skills, self-knowledge, awareness of opportunities for further studies, professions and professional fields and helps individuals to identify their abilities, and interests in the different stages of their life. The qualification required for the position is a doctoral degree in Educational Sciences or an applicable degree. We expect strong evidence of ability to conduct and publish scientific research and publishing, especially related to guidance in education and its development. We further expect strong evidence of  teaching and supervision of theses, procuring research funding and of international networking.

Research experience or expertise of a successful applicant may have links to the following areas or themes: practices of guidance and study counselling in educational contexts of the comprehensive and upper secondary schooling, effectiveness of guidance practices, guidance in educational contexts containing diversity, support through guidance for identification and prevention of marginalization development, guidance in educational and career transitions, examination of educational paths and structures in societal or educational changes, and data-based guidance. Assets considered in evaluation of applicants include networking and impact in the areas of research, training or development in the guidance field. Pedagogical training and completion of guidance qualification studies are also considered assets in evaluation of applicants.

An Assistant / Associate Professor’s duties include teaching at the basic, subject and advanced levels in the field of the position and related developmental tasks. Administrative tasks and other academic responsibilities are also part of an assistant / associate Professor’s duties. The assistant/associate professor supervises both undergraduate and postgraduate theses and acquires external funding to maintain a research group.

A position of Assistant Professor is defined for a fixed-term of 3 to 5 years and a position of Associate Professor is defined for a fixed-term of 5 years, (according to the tenure track model). At the conclusion of each fixed-term assignment, there will be an evaluation procedure to assess the employee's qualifications for promotion.

Salary

Salaries are based on job demands and employees’ performance following the Finnish University Salary System. A holiday bonus is paid to all employees. There is a trial period of six months at the start of the period of employment.

4. A  maximum of five (5) main publications, numbered in accordance with the list of publications
5. A brief description of the applicant’s merits related to research, research leadership,  and research funding, and a research plan related to the position and a vision of how the applicant’s current and future activities will complement those of the department and faculty, and the position being applied for (total of max 4 pages).
6. Portfolio of teaching credits (max. 3 pages).
