Sunnybrook is a tertiary care hospital in the heart of the Greater Toronto Area, with approximately 1.2 million patient visits annually, including 64,000 Emergency Department visits. It serves as a regional referral centre for burns, stroke, cancer, interventional cardiology, neurosurgery, vascular and spinal surgery, and high-risk maternal and neonatal care. Sunnybrook is the base hospital for Toronto EMS, Canada’s largest trauma centre, and the first hospital in Canada accredited by the American College of Surgeons as a Level 1 Trauma Centre.
The Emergency Department includes a collegial group of approximately 45 physicians committed to academic success and clinical excellence. Group wellness and flexible scheduling are prioritized to support diverse practice patterns and interests, including:

Clinically, the department operates in a well-resourced environment with a diverse and complex patient population, strong specialist consultant support, allied health collaboration, and comprehensive follow-up options.
Sunnybrook is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and serves as a core training site for the Emergency Medicine Residency Program, as well as multiple postgraduate and fellowship programs. Faculty members are established leaders in medical education.
The department is a lead site for POCUS training, and its simulation program provides teaching and continuing professional development in a high-fidelity, interprofessional, team-based environment.
The Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, and the Department of Emergency Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre invite applications for up to six full-time academic positions, including:
Clinician Teachers
Clinician Educators
Clinicians in Quality & Innovation
Clinician Investigators
Successful candidates must be eligible for a Full-Time Clinical Academic appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. The effective start date will be mutually agreed upon.
Provide exemplary, efficient, and patient-centred emergency care
Supervise and support bedside teaching of trainees
Provide medical consultation to in-field paramedic teams through the patch program
Contribute to the academic mission through education, quality improvement, research, and/or administration
MD or equivalent
Certification in Emergency Medicine (FRCPC, CCFP-EM, or DABEM)
English proficiency
Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario
Strong clinical and teaching skills
Estimated annual compensation of $300,000–$400,000, based on full-time clinical work and academic contributions, funded through the Alternate Funding Arrangement (AFA) and Alternate Funding Plan (AFP).
