The Department of Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for the position of Program Director, Nephrology. Applicants must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the University of Toronto. Successful completion of the Continuing Faculty Appointment Review (CFAR) is required. Preference will be given to applicants at the rank of Assistant Professor or above.

The Division of Nephrology at the University of Toronto is a dynamic and vibrant division, being central to the clinical care of complex patients at all of the major teaching hospitals affiliated with the University of Toronto. The clinical care, research, education and quality improvement activities in the Division are world-class, and the numerous hospital sites offer an unparalleled breadth and depth of training and scholarly experiences in the field of Nephrology.

The Program Director, Nephrology is a leadership position, highly valued and pivotal to the overall success of the Department. The Program Director is responsible for the overall conduct, organization and accountability of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada’s Nephrology residency training program.

The Program Director reports directly to the Vice-Chair, Education (or designate) and the Departmental Division Director, and is also accountable to the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide overall leadership, organization, and accountability for the Nephrology residency training program.
• Ensure residents achieve the competencies required in Nephrology.
• Prepare residents thoroughly for Royal College examinations and future careers as Nephrology subspecialists.
• Work closely with the Vice-Chair, Education, Departmental Division Director, and Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will:

• Be a respected clinical teacher or educator.
• Be an innovative leader with well-developed interpersonal and communication skills.
• Demonstrate a strong interest in medical education.
• Have a solid track record of scholarship and innovation (considered a strong asset).

Applicants must:

• Hold an MD degree.
• Be a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Nephrology Specialist, or be eligible for certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
• Be licensed or eligible for licensure in Ontario.

Clinical Practice Location

The preferred hospital site for the Program Director’s clinical activities will be negotiated with the successful candidate and will be one of the following fully affiliated University sites:

• Sinai Health Systems
• Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (SHSC)
• St. Michael’s Hospital
• University Health Network (UHN)

Compensation and Support

The Program Director, Nephrology will receive:

• Annual stipend of $50,000 plus HST (if applicable) from the Department of Medicine.
• Administrative support from an administrative assistant.
• Access to team workspace within the Department of Medicine.
