The Departments of Surgery, Division of General Surgery at St. Michael’s Hospital and the University of Toronto are inviting applications for a permanent full-time position for an Academic Trauma and Acute Care Surgeon. The effective start date is flexible, tentatively planned for fall 2026.
The Trauma Program at St. Michael’s Hospital is verified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level-1 trauma centre. The Division of General Surgery consists of surgeons specializing in:
Colorectal surgical oncology
Breast cancer surgical oncology
Benign colorectal diseases
Trauma/acute care surgery
Abdominal wall reconstruction
Biliary tract disease
The successful candidate will:
Provide high-quality care to patients with trauma and emergency general surgical conditions.
Join a team of five trauma surgeons rotating on the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery service.
Care for critically ill trauma and emergency general surgery patients in a closed trauma and neurosurgery critical care unit and medical/surgical ICU.
Applicants must:
Hold certification in General Surgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent.
Have completed at least one year of post-residency fellowship in Trauma Surgery / Trauma and Acute Care Surgery from an accredited program.
Be eligible for or hold licensure from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
Additional expectations:
Demonstrated excellence in clinical care, teaching, and mentorship.
Commitment to professionalism, collaboration, and academic contribution.
Graduate-level training in areas such as public health, health services, translational/basic science research, clinical epidemiology, surgical education, or quality improvement is preferred.
The candidate must be eligible for appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in the Department of Surgery, Temerty Faculty of Medicine.
The Trauma Program is one of two adult trauma programs in the GTA and a major referral centre for the Province.
Trauma care is a declared priority program at St. Michael’s Hospital.
The Department also houses provincial programs in neurosurgery, cardiac/vascular surgery, and renal transplantation.
Trauma care is supported by academic and clinical excellence in Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, Orthopedic, Plastic, and Vascular Surgery.
St. Michael’s Hospital is one of Canada’s largest clinical and research hospitals, part of Unity Health Toronto, and fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. It hosts one of the University’s three Academies for undergraduate education. The hospital is internationally recognized for clinical excellence and research leadership.

Estimated remuneration: $400,000 – $500,000 per annum, based on fee-for-service activity, qualifications, and experience.
