Associate / Full Professor of Rhetoric and Writing

University of Texas Austin Department of Rhetoric and Writing

United States

The Department of Rhetoric and Writing (DRW) at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a tenured position at the rank of advanced associate or full professor starting in Fall 2021. We seek a colleague specializing in writing studies to join our faculty and serve as faculty director of the department’s University Writing Center [UWC]. We especially welcome candidates with experience in fostering diverse and inclusive environments, in anti-racist practice and pedagogy, and in 21st-century writing technologies.

The successful candidate will be the first holder of the DRW’s newly acquired Joan Negley Kelleher Centennial Professorship in Rhetoric and Composition, as well as the recipient of its associated salary supplement, for one 6-year term.

The ideal candidate need not have writing center experience, although they should have administrative or other programmatic experience. They should be prepared to serve up to two consecutive 4-year terms as faculty director of the UWC.  While actively serving as Director, the successful candidate will receive two months of summer salary and will receive one course release per academic year.  The director’s chief responsibilities include providing vision and strategic direction; serving as liaison between the UWC and university administration; building and maintaining collaborations with other units across and beyond the university; managing the nationally respected and peer-reviewed journal of writing-center studies, Praxis; and supervising the UWC assistant director, who manages the UWC’s daily operations.

The successful candidate will be expected to publish actively; teach both graduate and undergraduate courses; direct dissertations, 3rd-year exams, and honors theses; and offer service to the Department, the College, and the University. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to design and teach an array of courses that contribute to the undergraduate major in Rhetoric and Writing and the Ph.D. concentration in Rhetoric—all with the support of our nationally renowned Digital Writing and Research Lab (DWRL).

The DRW boasts a dynamic, diverse, collegial, nationally and internationally recognized faculty with interests in rhetorical history and theory; composition theory and pedagogy; digital writing and rhetoric; visual, sonic, and computational rhetorics; feminist and cultural rhetorics; media studies; and empirical research. Sub-units of the DRW include the University Writing Center and the Digital Writing and Research Lab.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in rhetoric and writing or related field, an active research agenda specializing in writing studies, a scholarly publication record commensurate with rank, strong evidence of teaching excellence, and program or other academic administration experience.

To apply, please submit a letter of application, a curriculum vita, a sample of scholarly writing, a 1-page diversity statement, a research statement, a one-page statement summarizing your approach to departmental/university administration, and syllabi for at least one undergraduate and one graduate class via Interfolio.
