Description

The University of California-Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz Graduate School of Education's (GGSE) seeks to fill a tenured position at the Associate or Full Professor level in the area of Teacher Education and Professional Development within its Department of Education.

The Department of Education in the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Santa Barbara seeks an experienced scholar in Teacher Education at the Associate or Professor level, who has long-standing and well-recognized expertise in this area. This scholar should have an outstanding record of research that makes visible processes and effects of initial teacher preparation as it is carried into a professional career in education. The candidate will take a leadership role in current and future research efforts in the Teacher Education Program. He/she/they will help design new directions for more integrated efforts in teacher education between the program and the rest of the department at the undergraduate, credential, and doctoral levels. The candidate may have teaching responsibilities in the Department's M.A./Ph.D. Program, Teacher Education Program, and undergraduate programs.


The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Education or related field at the time of application. The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service as appropriate to the position. He/she/they must have a clear and strong commitment to issues of equity and diversity in teacher education. We are especially interested in candidates who also have the following qualifications:

(a) experience designing and conducting high-quality preservice teacher education and in-service teacher professional development;
(b) expertise in the relationship between theories of learning and teaching and the practice of teacher education and professional development (note this can be in a particular subject matter discipline as long as the focus is on teacher education);
(c) a track-record of securing extra-mural grants and contracts;
(d) experience forging new practice-research relationships in the work of teacher education, both within and across the university and P-12 schools;
(e) a scholarly record that bridges theory, policy and practice at the regional, state, national, and/or international levels; and
(f) experience in the preparation of teacher educators.

The Gevirtz Graduate School of Education is part of UC Santa Barbara, a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), and located on the Pacific coast 90 miles north of Los Angeles. The GGSE offers M.A.s and Ph.D.s in the Department of Education, the Department of Counseling, Clinical and School Psychology, and M.Ed.s in the Teacher Education Program, which also prepares students for California teaching credentials in elementary, secondary (math, science, history/social science, world languages, and English), and special education (serving students with mild moderate or moderate to severe disabilities. The School also offers three undergraduate minors in Education, Applied Psychology, and Science & Mathematics Education.
