New York University

United States

Description

New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development invites applications for a tenure-line position in the Department of Teaching and Learning to begin September 1, 2022.   We are committed to substantially increasing the proportion of our faculty from historically underrepresented groups as we strive to create the most intellectually diverse, inclusive, anti-racist, and equitable institution that we can. We especially encourage candidates from historically underrepresented groups to apply.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: We are hiring for an Associate Professor (with tenure) and Georgiou Chair in Children’s Literature and Literacy, who will contribute to curriculum development and community-facing programming in children’s literature and literacy through The Constantine Georgiou Library, housed within the Department.  We seek an established scholar with a strong vision of the significance of literature and literary ways of understanding to child/youth development and the preparation of educators, with a specific focus on literary texts and tools that can be leveraged to develop equitable and inclusive opportunities for learning.

The candidate’s ability to work well within a large multi-disciplinary department spanning virtually all areas of PK-12 education will also be essential, as the successful candidate will be expected to work closely and collaboratively with teacher education colleagues in the Department of Teaching and Learning and across NYU/Steinhardt, including colleagues in the arts, applied psychology, educational technology, physical and occupational therapy, the arts therapies, and speech and communicative sciences and disorders.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach courses in the programs in English Education, Elementary Education, and other relevant programs within the Department, at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels;

  • Continue an active program of research and publication;

  • Work closely with the librarian of the Georgiou Library and other relevant NYU departments (e.g. Fales Library) to develop community-facing and student-oriented programming around diversity and representation in children’s literature;

  • Serve as a thought partner and content resource on questions and issues related to children’s literature for faculty in the Department of Teaching and Learning as well as other departments in Steinhardt and across the university.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: An earned doctorate in Literacy, English Education, English or related field is required, along with an established program of research and published scholarly work in top-tier, peer-reviewed journals and/or with academic publishers.  Success in securing external funding is desirable, though not required.  Candidates should be tenured or approaching tenure review at their current institution.

Comfort and experience with technology-enhanced education is required.

Application Instructions

APPLICATIONS: Please apply online with a letter of application, curriculum vitae, research statement, three samples of scholarly writing, teaching statement, diversity statement (describing how you address diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, and belonging in the scope of your teaching and broader work), and names and contact information for three references who will be automatically contacted by Interfolio on your behalf to upload confidential letters. Please contact the search committee chair if you have questions or concerns about submitting your references or any other part of the application.

Application review will begin on October 15, 2021 and will continue until the position is filled. Anticipated start date is September 1, 2022.  Additional information about the position may be obtained from Search Chair Dr. Sarah Beck at sarah.beck@nyu.edu.
