Associate Professor in Archaeological Materials Science (ref. no. CYI_ASSP_25_19)
Deadline for applications: 12/02/2026
Application process open*
The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:
1. The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC)
2. The Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC)
3. The Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC)
4. The Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)
5. The Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC)
Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s scientific ethos.
The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a new faculty member at the level of Associate Professor in the broader area of Archaeological Materials Science within the framework of the ERA Chair project “One Archaeological Science”, to join the Institute’s STARC Centre on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassa’s Campus.
The ERA Chair “One Archaeological Science” project aims to promote the use of isotope analyses across the archaeological science teams at STARC. The position offers an opportunity to build on the research profile of our material science laboratories within the domain of (inorganic) archaeological materials science, with expertise in geological methodologies such as petrography, mineralogy and chemical (elemental and isotope ratio) analysis methods. We seek candidates who can capitalise on this investment and in addition can contribute to research in environmental archaeology and human bioarchaeology.
The successful applicant will be expected to be a leader in the development of key research facilities at The Cyprus Institute (continuation of SEM-EDS and optical petrography lab, additional self-acquired laboratory equipment), will develop the use of international analytical facilities in the framework of team science, and will explore the development of such laboratories at CyI.
The successful applicant shall work regularly with the other Archaeological Science faculty at STARC for research development in the lab and the field, including the development of isotope-based research. They will contribute broadly to practical skills development and teaching at postgraduate level across the range of disciplinary expertise and joint programmes offered by CyI.
They may also develop specialist modules in line with the curriculum and their own research expertise. They will be expected to attract external grants to recruit and supervise postgraduate research students and postdoctoral researchers. Experience in inter-sectoral outreach and collaboration is an additional strength.
