The Department of Physical Geography is one of the major departments within the Faculty of Science. The department has approximately 110 employees and educates approximately 1 000 students annually. Education is oriented towards geography, geosciences, biology-earth sciences, and environmental protection and environmental management. The main research areas are: Geomorphology and Glaciology; Water, Permafrost and Environmental Systems; Climate Science and Quaternary Geology; and Landscape, Evironment and Geomatics. Research, teaching and supervision. 

Qualification requirements
In order to qualify for employment as an associate professor, the applicant must have demonstrated teaching skills and have a doctoral degree or equivalent expertise, of relevance to the subject area and the main responsibilities of the position..

All teaching positions at Stockholm University require the ability to collaborate and the general ability and suitability to perform one’s duties.

Assessment criteria
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research and teaching skills. The assessment of research skills will focus primarily on merits within the subject area of the position.
In the case of otherwise similar qualifications, the following criteria will be used to distinguish between candidates:

  • Ability to collaborate with researchers from one or more of the department’s research units: Geomorphology and Glaciology; Water, Permafrost and Environmental Systems; Climate Science and Quaternary Geology; and Landscape, Environment and Geomatics.
  • Documented experience and competence in using geographic information systems (GIS) in research and teaching.

Teaching and learning in higher education
Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education worth at least 15 credits, or equivalent knowledge, is an advantage. An applicant who has not completed at least 15 credits of teaching and learning in higher education and is not considered to have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge should undergo such training within the first two years of employment.

Additional information
The position, in Swedish "universitetslektor"; is a tenured position approximately equivalent to Senior Lecturer (UK) or Associate Professor (US).

At basic education level, the responsibilities include teaching within all the department's bachelor's programs. Proficiency in Swedish is not a requirement at the time of appointment, but the candidate should be prepared to carry out teaching and administrative duties that require proficiency in Swedish within two years of employment.
